we all know what a MGBGT is and the smaller two seater Midget, but what about those forgotten 4 seater saloons that could accommodate at least four adults in comfort, lets see photo that you have taken or ones that your parents did which have you in the car during its hey day. the mkIII MAGNETTE announced 2 February 1959 and ran untill 61, was nearly identical to the Riley 4/68, Pinin Farina designed, the MG and its Riley sibling were factory fitted with twin S.U. H.D.4 carburetters, interior featured a walnut veneer facia panel, door cappings and leather upholstery, a top speed of 85.5 mph, fuel consumption of 31.4 mpg, and cost around £1012 including taxes. 1964 MG MAGNETTE 1600cc by shagracer, on Flickr the MG 1300 with its twin carbs ran from 67 untill 73 (1100 ran 62-68) 1968 MG 1300 by shagracer, on Flickr 1968 MG 1300 by shagracer, on Flickr another MG 1300 but this time a 2-door in two tone paint 1968 MG 1300 2 DOOR SALOON by shagracer, on Flickr

They did an 1100 as well. Airfix did a 1/32 scale model of one which was also available as a slot car. Then there's the ZA and ZB Magnettes that pre-dated the Farina ones.

I've got a thing for the ZA Magnette (and its Wolesley counterpart) - beautifully styled cars and not particularly expensive even now. No photos unfortunately...

I have a big soft spot for the ZB Magnette, plenty of them round this parish as they're raced in historic stock cars. Normally get quite a big field of them at Foxhall when they're racing. The Magnette has a proud history in oval racing.

the Magnette (two above) is the ZA which ran from 1954 untill 56, it had a 1500 engine with twin 1.1/4inch SU carburettors, factory colours were gray, black, maroon, and green. it was replaced by the ZB towards the end of 56 and ran untill 58, the ZB came with bigger twin carbs now up to 1.1/2inch and a better manifold Qwertyvw took this picture of a 1958 ZB

My first car in 1971 was a 56 ZA in storm grey with red leather. It ended up with a 1942cc MGB lump, overdrive and a Ford Aubergine over VW savannah beige 2 tone paintjob before being sold to make way for a 1650cc MkI Cortina "woody" estate. I wish I still had it now, it gave me a taste for 3 things which still haunt me today, Leather seats, wood dash and push button starting!

Y Type for me - I grew up in a YB which my dad restored in the mid 70s and my mum used as a daily driver until the early 90s. As a little boy I remember I was very facinated with the flip out front windshield

YA and YB are the same car pictured above. The YB was an update version of the YA. From wikipedia There was also a YT which was a convertible of the YA/YB en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_Y-type

THE MG SA was a large 1930s saloon with a 2300cc engine and the MG VA was its little brother with a smaller 1600cc engine
Both were available as saloon or convertible

My Father is a big fan of the ADO16 and owned umpteen of them from the early 1960's to the late 1970's including an MG 1300 & an Austin 1300 GT. For anyone who's not that familiar with the car they were badge engineered variants which ranged from a spartan 1100 to the mini Rolls-Royce wannabee the Vanden Plas Princess. The ADO16 was marketed under various make and model names including:- Austin 1100 and 1300. Austin America, Glider and Victoria. Innocenti IM3. MG 1100 and 1300. Morris 1100 and 1300. Riley Kestrel and Riley 1300. Vanden Plas Princess 1100 / 1275 / 1300. Wolseley 1100, 1275, 1300, 11/55 & Wesp. Possibly one of the most famous examples of the ADO16 was one of the rare Austin 1100 Countryman versions which took a damn good thrashing off Basil Fawlty. They were, in my opinion, as good as any car of their era. They weren't a sleek design but were roomy enough for a small family saloon. The hydrolastic suspension gave the car a comfortable enough ride whilst assisting its positive handling. The mechanical side of things was reasonably robust & they were an easy car to work on. They rusted but so did all the other cars of the era. The performance versions such as the GT & MG twin carb cars handled sportily enough, very many family saloons were still rwd at the time. I owned a Vanden Plas version & found it quite chuckable. Singling out the MG badged version; it was better trimmed than the base models and perkier with the twin carbs. Going downhill with a tailwind it was possible to 'do the ton' in the 1300 twin carb versions. I think that the 2 door version was the better car, it looked nicer & was slightly lighter with better rigidity than the 4 door version. There are not lots of these around now but the 4 door versions are much rarer than the 2 door versions. Many of the MG 1100's / 1300's were presented in two tone paintwork which added to their appeal & character; The ADO16 is a car which you could realistically use as an everyday ride, although there are some tweaks which would be advisable such as electronic ignition. I know my Father would buy an MG 1300 or a 1300 GT for everyday use if he could find a really nice one but prices have finally started to climb. I tried unsuccessfully to tempt him with this MG 1300, (now sold); Will keep looking .... Still with MG saloons, I always thought the Magnette handsome enough although I think it was generally a fairly unremarkable car. The one thing about this saloon which really stood out & lifted it from the mundane was the Art Deco inspired instrument panel;
