as title, was cornering far too hard and it pulled me right in towards the ditch on the wrong side, i don't know what i did but whatever it was, it were that or roll at one point. so do you steer in and back off or what?

Normally if it's regular understeer then lifting off is the best course of action. However if it's MEGA understeer then lifting off suddenly could result in lift off oversteer a la Pug 205 and then you would have to steer into the oversteer. I even managed to get my old Allagro sideways on a wet roundabout by lifting off which was a bit surpising I can tell you  Driving a RWD car too fast especially in the wet comes with it's own problems too though, in the the Viva wheelspinning at 20MPH in third gear without trying is interesting  |

Lift off oversteer is great I used to be able to do it at will in my first CX Turbo and the dyane gets all wibbly wobbly out of shape on it Fun but scary to watch. As for correct action for mega understeer, id say lift off and steer in more. if you can remove some nose weight from the car it will lessen the problem, or just slow down, or buy new tyres |

when my mini used to understeer (you had to be really pushing it) i used to floor it, that would pull it round. (it had very wide sticky tyres and sorted suspension though)
Oval racing corsas the other day, they were understeering savage, just gave it more gas and turned in more, seemed to work, but if i'd floored it in them i don't think it would have worked, not enough traction.
Front wheel drive will pull the front round in corners.
Good tip for getting out of tight parking spaces (also works well at killing cv joints)
Handbrake on tight, lots of gas and spin the wheels, the back stays where it is and the front goes sideways, same sort of principal during understeer,

I've been told on more than one occasion, wiggling the wheel left and right helps to regain some grip to be honest, I;ve never tried it, and I'm usually having too much fun sliding about to care |

And slow down in future before the corner not in it Slow in, fast out Definitely Get your (slower) entry speed sorted before the corner, then accelerate through it, the front wheels will then tug you on-line into the bend, (ie tighter) as you go round... Unless you give it bootfuls, in which case you're heading for the ditch ;D |

I think the generally accepted procedure is to lift the inside front wheel, slide across the road and roll into a ditch,... well thats how the rallying R5s and Novas seem to react |

:)I'd say steer in and back off. Gently! In my old XR2 I over cooked it once on a roundabout in Dorking just after I got it, paniced and back off too much and the car did a 180 degree spin. My mate and I shat ourselves then about 10 seconds later a police car drove past luckly I was facing the right way by then. Lift off over steer didn't even know it existed until then! (I was only 18) |

if your understeering already then steering into it more is just gonna make it worse, you have to lift off gradually and unwind some lock.
sounds like your gonna drive into a ditch, but if you can get some grip back the car WILL corner, if it don't then you were going to fast for the car/your ability and don't do it again, lesson learnt.
minis are fast round corners for precisly this reason, foot flat on floor as corner approaches, start winding on lock, mini understeers and stays straight, lift off gas, front wheels grip and steer car, weight transfer throws rear of car out and there ya go right angle turns at 50mph.
i hate fwd, its curse word for going round corners unless your in a super market, give up and buy something rwd

Remember kids... Lift off oversteer is dangerous.  But then certain cars are just bad for it. Like Mk4 Polos for example. |

Pulling the handbrake on slightly can cure it but its difficult to do everything when you're heading towards a ditch.

and you need big faith in your handbarke. But i guess if you heading for a ditch you might as well try. I constantly had it in my mind with the mini (fiberglass front) that if i ws going to crash i'd 180 it with the handrabe and crash with the passeger side (if empty) or rear. Used to scare the curse word out of me belting along and remembering exactly what the front of the car consists of! I miss that car  |
