Looks like I have become well known in the local area because over the past 20 years I have owned a string of old VW's (several custom and restored Beetles, type 2's and type 3's). Because of the old VW's I got a call from an old friend through the week. A friend of his cousin had moved away a few years ago and was looking to move again but had a 1993 Golf Clipper cabrio in their garage. With no use for it they were going to scrap it but remembered that there was a guy in the last area they lived that was into old VW's and wondered if he would like it..... That guy was me and after the message had been relayed through 5 people it finally reached my mate who passed the details onto me. (still with me?) Short version, today I went for a look at a Golf that I had no real need for.....Guess the outcome? As found in the garage where it was last taxed until October 2012; Flat battery so a quick push outside to get a look. The roof is badly damaged from age and a previously patched over vandal attack and a small dent on the rear corner but other than that its in full working order. Power windows, power roof, alloys with the original wheels included, full service history (2 previous owners), CD player, thatcham alarm/imobilizer and taneau cover. What do you know, I going back to bring it home on Tuesday. What did it set me back? £100 His wife was giving me it for nowt but I felt bad and had to give him something. Once its down the road I will MOT it and get it a new mohair roof then decide if its replacing my Audi A6 estate, just need to work out how to carry my bike in or on it. Dave. P.S. I havent forggotten about the resto of my wifes '67 beetle, I will get back to that in the summer.

Flip sake that's a bargain. Ok it needs a new roof but for £100! Well done.

Part of his reasoning was that it would need a new roof an MOT and a few bits and bobs before selling and the cost of this would cancel out or be more than what it would sell for plus be time and effort to complete.
He is happy its going to go back on the road and be used again.

Today was collection day so I met up with my mate with his truck and off we went to pull it out the garage. As I needed to do a bit of car shuffling to get it on the drive I thought it would be a shame to miss the chance of a group picture; All nice rust free and original under here; The battery is missing in the above shot due to being convex......Never a good thing for a battery; Not had it started and running yet due in part to the battery and more to do with this jumble of wires and grafted on imobilizer; After 2 hours of juggling the above spaghetti I gave up and came home to look through the paperwork. It seems like it has had a good bit of money spent on it through the years. The last MOT in 2011 shows advisories for front suspension bushes so need to add that to the list of jobs as I imagine they will be shot by now. To be honest I'm not sure I can see me keeping the car but I will get it running, MOT'd and re-roofed before I decide. Dave.

Small update for today. Battery charged so a chance to try things and compile a sick report.
Not working:
Wipers Clock electric windows Door speakers
Working:
Lights power roof starter motor radio (needs attention and the plum that fitted it put speakers on the back panels that stop the back windows going down fully Ermm)
It did fire and run but only for a short burst. I have a feeling that its full of old fuel and may have a blocked filter and the fuel pump relay is ticking constantly so may be something wrong there.
Exciting to get the roof working and its booked to go to the auto spark on Monday and all being well it will have an MOT by the weekend.
Dave.

Thats the only way I see it working. I have already built myself a rack for the tow bar on the Audi I have, just need to source and fit the tow bar to the clipper. This is the rack I built in action; Whitlees winter cycle 8/2/15 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr Dave

It probably wants the fusebox pulling and cleaning up - a lot!
Unreal find - not many registered on an 'L'

That is an absolute gem and a real steal...
It is nice to know that there are people out there that will let true enthusiasts have cars that they once loved for a reasonable fee (if any fee at all)...!!!
I am sure this will end up looking pretty darn sharp! Will you put the original alloys back on?
Please do keep us fully posted every step of the way...

cheers chaps, it's going to the spark on Monday then it's booked for an MOT to see what's needed. All being well it will be roadworthy by next weekend and I can book it's visit to the roof place (dark blue mohair is the current plan).
I think the original wheels would have been steels and the last owner has given me the 4 centre caps and will look out the wheels when he gets a chance but there are only 3 of them, I didn't ask where the fourth went.
I will keep the thread updated and in the meantime if anybody spots a tow bar or rear interior panels in the same pattern cloth please let me know.
Cheers, Dave.

Yes clippers did generally come with steels, my choice would be G60 steels in 15 inch flavour or rivage convertible wheels I think they were called castalettes? Rivage were a similar colour, but I think they had a tan or cream leather interior. Shame about the speaker problem. Such a great engine, they can feel quite quick for what they are and give pretty good economy on a run.

Lovely find. Good man for giving the owner a small gesture to say thanks as well. I guess, I'm biased because of my mk2, but i do think a set of black banded steels would look treats against the blue paintwork. Bookmarked.

I think for now I will keep the wheels on there that it is coming with for a few reasons. 1: Not my usual cop of tea but not damaged. 2: all fitted with tyres that were brand new when laid up (old ones slashed at the same time as the roof) 3: still might sell it on so don't want to make it too personal incase it reduces my market. Mean while I treated it to a brand new battery so total spend so far is £195 including the towing cost. I pulled the speakers out of the rear panels, didnt take much as there were no screws holding them in and the windows still don't go all the way down so must be the way they were designed. Anybody have small, shallow speaker grills off something else? I can get dimensions later. Last point, I tried to decode the options from the sticker but none of the lists I can find show the below codes, can anybody help? Dave

Booked a tow today to spin the car up for an MOT and while I was waiting I decided to give the roof a try while the rain was off; I didnt think to check the fluid level so got a shock when it wouldnt close again and it started to snow Used the manual bypass to shut it and going to go to the VW dealership tomorrow for fluid. Dave.
