So, i'm currently in the process of rebuilding a BMW S54 engine (e46 M3, 3.2l, 340BHP) with the intention of putting in my E46 coupe. The only thing is, putting it in my E46 is a bit obvious, and a bit boring... a cool retro would be a much more interesting recipient!
So my question is, what car would you put it in?
It's a high revving N/A engine, with lots of power and average torque, so I think it would suit a light-ish coupe. An old BMW is the obvious choice (E30, E21 etc) but i've been thinking something along the lines of a porsche 944 would be cool, and probably more capable with 340bhp than an old bimmer...
What would you do?

What with 944 having transaxles rather than conventional gearbags, I would question if engine+box driving line would taint the superb handling, or even fit without fabbing a trans tunnel. It sort of depends what your thing thinking of using it for, but almost anything RWD will be a hoot not just light stuff.

If you go down the E21 route then there is a classic race car running one, more details can be found at bmwe21.net
Though an E21 will take a lot of money to get it to the point of not breaking the rear axle every 5 minutes with that engine. E30 is a much better choice and a lot stronger, prefacelift doesn't even look that much more modern than an E21.

Buy a narrow body Z3 in that funny turquoise colour and blow everyone away.

Something open top to get maximum aural pleasure

Triumph Herald/Vitesse (estate for maximum effect) or Spitfire/GT6, or a Triumph 2000/2500 (it's been done with other BMW 6cyls).

In Holland a guy is putting A S54 into a Defender. There was a M52 powered Landy in SA so engine mounts are available.
Omega could be relatively easy.
E36 could be an option, maybe the compact?
Lexus IS200 would revive with an engine like that.

I'm thinking you go with a Capri but if you head down the E21 route, get onto Mark E21 he will be great for advice

wow, loads of good suggestions there!
I do quite like the old BMW options - E28 and 34 especially, although E30 is a bit more tried and tested. Also E36s are really growing on me, basically a less flabby E46 I guess! and it pretty much drops in...
Really liking the idea of a triumph GT6/spitfire too, but they seems to be getting too pricey for me...
And I still think a 944 is a good idea, maybe using a turbo transaxle to try and keep the balance of the car?
I'd go Monza over Manta, surprised no ones suggested it!
Corvette C4 would be cracking, and curse word of most of the internet to boot!
And that granada is bloody fantastic!
