Plenty of images of horribly gaudily wrapped modern exotics to be found upon the internet, but what about retros? I was surprised not to find a previous thread upon this site, so..... I stumbled across pictures of this Mercedes W108 300SEL & for some reason thought it somehow looked more appropriate that on some Rappers new Mercedes SL Perhaps because my father has one of these: Then I found this one: I suppose Hot wheels has been at that sort of thing since the late '60's as well. I remembered these ones from Retro-Riders: MTVViva's '66 Viva before it was stripped & repainted black including interior dbizzle's now satin Blue 205 Gti pervypaul's Seat Ibiza Mk1 mardell100's Volvo 480 And hunted down these pictures as well. Donks certainly seem into it! This ones a little big linkI must admit that some of the more modern satin metallic, chrome, coloured chrome & brushed metal finishes particularly intrigue me as being difficult to achieve by other means. Faux Wood has been in use since the early '60's and mock Carbon has come a looong way since the silver & black checkers of the '90's!

All the shiny/chrome wrapped stuff is a bit of an eyesore. I think it works better with more subtle colours or a patterned wrap like so:

Printed graphics like that ^^ would also be interesting for the effort required to line them up with adjoining sheets as they wrap around body curves & require part-lines. Stumbled across this one on television at a friends place last week: FantomworksGarish & a bit silly, but still very impressive & interesting. Said they scanned the body to help layout where they might separate the vinyl sheets. Obviously not easy upon such a curvacious body & would require experience & skill, though I guess the graphics would distract attention from sheet joins.

The start of my motoring "career" was in the early 70's when murals were all the craze on custom cars. I suppose wrapping with a design is a modern equivalent. Thing that bothers me about it how well does it stand up to slight knocks and scrapes. Most of my journeys are down lanes where you often bush against a hedge etc when passing cars coming the other way down narrow sections. I'd hate to spend a small fortune on having a car wrapped only to get it ruined by something normal paintwork would shrug off.

Its fairly robust, but does come in various thicknesses, and thus price. Thicker wraps are harder to apply to. You pays your money and takes your choice.
keep looking ar plasti-dip for my van. Its cheap, easy to apply and will protect the vuneable areas of paint on yhe van. I'd be tempted to peel it off though!

Wraps are surprisingly tough. The better quality gloss ones will take to machine polishing just like paint if and when swirls and little marks start being added. It's far easier to have a panel re-wrapped than painted and the surrounding area blended in.
Plasti-dip is a terrible product. A lot of people think it's protecting the paint underneath but I've seen a fair few now that have taken the coating off to find that the paint has been stained from the Plasti-dip. It takes a lot of heavy polishing and sometimes wet sanding to remove the damage.

Thanks Scratcher-I've only seen video's of it, and no first hand experience. Had some panels wrapped on the van, very cheaply (so very thin wrap) and they have stood the test of time with just some wear evident on the dorr frame from where I shut the door.

I was tempted to start a thread similar to this but relative to home wrapping experienced. What methods were used, material, grade, brand, supplier and so on. I've been using a certain product but I find it too thick for intricate parts and wanted to hear from people who has used other suppliers and brands.
I am all for wrapping providing it's done tastefully. Personally I can not stand the chrome effect wrap. I think this lairy glittery pink you see on these incredibly bold drift cars is cool. But chrome just doesn't seem to do it for me.

I'm horribly tempted by the coloured red, blue etc. chromes for the ultimate candy finish while the satin & matt coloured chromes & metallics can have a surreal iridescent effect in capturing light. Obviously easy to look crass though the HotWheels toy effect can succeed & 'feature' areas like two-tone roof should always work well (!?). More realistically I'd be too scared. That shouldn't stop me trying the chrome wrap upon custom fiberglass bumpers, replacing original chrome though... One day.. less tasteful Maybe.. Yes.

^ Modern Vinyl roofs! At least developing rust should be more obvious. Haven't looked for leather grained wraps. Or Kitchen Stone/granite effects.
