I wish I could remember now! I was probably just aimlessly following links (I'm easily distracted) and wound up here.
I've never really been into a single make scene although Land Rovers have been a fairly constant presence over the last thirty years or so, but I've never wanted to join an owners club of any sort. I'm on RangeRovers.net as well, but mainly for the model specific advice the site is full of, but it's not a "home".
I just love the variety here and that mix of skills, cars and people, coupled with a general good humour, are what make it for me. So yeah, well done to the guys who started all this and to those who make the effort to contribute. Also to those who put up with my sometimes off-topic ramblings. Cheers!

If there was a like button i'de be pressing it, glad you have been able to find something that you enjoy doing, bonus points for it being RR related! Ditto! Great comments all around. I can't really recall my exact path to R-R. After a break from years of kitcar projects, I got itchy and starting Googling older cars. How could that not lead me here? I check here too many times a day for new stuff. I love that every project is an individual's take on what they want their car to be, if it means flying in the face of the 'scene', and as already mentioned, with can-do attitude and lack of ego. Well done to the founders for creating such a positive forum to embrace all of that. I nominated Retro-Rides for my 'Best Media' award as it's the only place I visit regularly, but they're far too discrete to have included it in the vote. Cheers guy's. I don't post much but I'm on here daily for inspiration (rather shockingly since Jan 2008)... Which seems to be a common problem with this place! DAMN YOU RR.

I came to this site to meet ladies. I had been googling older women thinking a more mature lover would be worth a try and that's when I stumbled upon "Retro Rides". It's not what I expected but I like it in a different way

I had been on briskoda.net and I *think* my Datsun thread is still there (just checked, it is, with a ton of dead photo links) as my first car had been a 1.4 8V 2001 Skoda Fabia...with the bulletproof thirsty pushrod block. Similar to some of the Ford owners on here, I had been a paid up member of the UK zclub, but found the atmosphere ( especially as a 21 year old at the time who had never owned a classic or really knew what the hell he was doing) intimidating, rude, stuffy - oh another Z with slotmags and webers...great and frankly, unhelpful, but that was remedied after reading until the late hours on hybridz.org (probably the best Z car forum in existence) and largely abandoning zclub. Some years later I stumbled across the Readers Rides section here, and was after some fender mirror part numbers that someone had on a Cressida that was one of the rides. I ended up finding some from one of donttellhimpike infamous JDM clearouts (RIP buddy) and still have them, waiting to go on the Datsun. The diversity of new projects is what kept me interested, people like Mystery Machine and his transatlantic phonecalls to stay in touch are what kept me an active member, always cheered up at peoples friendliness, openness to new projects and general enthusiasm for something different. Long Live RetroRides, you've taught me a hell of a lot and totally changed the way I approach projects from a 'get someone else to do it' to a very much DIY outlook.

I really can't remember, but I saw the logo and got an idea a couple of times somewhere, without links, and decided to look it up.
I think it was about the gathering and at first I think I just thought it was a local club somewhere.
I most likely saw it either on clubpolo.co.uk or in PPC magazine. Either case, mid 2000's.

For me it was probably the fact that no other forum had the mix of cars that RR has. To go from forums which are all one make, or are against modifying, and then to come across RR was almost mind blowing I agree wholeheartedly! You can see almost any type of car on here, as everything has potential with the right amount of vision The Area52 thread was where it started for me. I don't know how I got onto it initially, but it really made me really inspired to see this bunch of car mad guys and girls forming this community and helping each other out with their cars and having a great time doing it. I've been looking at industrial units since then as it's something I'd love to do with some fellow car crazy mates of mine when I have some extra money some day! My Mazda 323 wagon was also a bit of an orphan when it came to most of the forums - too old for most Mazda ones and too new and not rotary enough for the old Mazda forums...

I've always driven 80's / early 90's cars when I wasn't saddled with some anodyne rep spec company car and had always tried my hand at basic tasks but had got out of the habit. When I bought my 325i a few years back I decided that had to change, and scoured the web for information. In a fit of Googling I came upon this site and I've been hooked ever since.
Some of the guys on here have more talent in their little finger than I'll ever have when it comes to fixing and fettling but that only inspires me more to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in. And if I do get stuck, I know there'll be someone on here that'll point me in the right direction.

It is hard to say why I got on this forum or what kept me here as there are just so many reasons to be totally honest and those reasons are changing and multiplying all the time...!!!
I think that variety is one of the main things though as you are guaranteed to be regularly amazed at what you see or read on this forum.
Then I think it just has to be the wonderfully friendly atmosphere that this forum has, there is just nothing else like it on the 'net that I know of!
I could go on and on and on but I won't as I will probably just go on for far too long...!!!
Thanks RR, you ain't half bad...!

I love cars... all cars. OK, most cars. Especially old ones
I could just leave that there, really, but to qualify further; I love cars and sharing cool cars with like-minded enthusiasts. But I hate the internet. More specifically, I hate the removal of culpability for offensive behaviour that it brings. Specifically, the bigger the forum, the greater the incidence of otherwise utterly social inadequates posting replies that are essentially "your [sic] car's [insert expletive] and your [sic] a [insert insult] HATE FILTH PROFANITY GIBBERISH INVECTIVE". On here, even though my cars are undeniably [insert expletive], everyone's kind enough to not point it out rudely every five seconds.
And of course, the breadth of amazing projects and fantastic, expert people willing to share hard-won knowledge (which is very different to the sort of knowledge that comes from "I read it on the internetz so it's true innit" or "my mate Rav heard it down the pub so it must be true" that infests other forums) make it a place you can lose hours of your life. But in a good way

My profile says I joined up in 2006, but I'm lucky if I remember if I put pants on this morning, let alone remember how I came across Retro Rides. I'm sure it was while looking about the interwebs for Escorts or Escort related guff. And the mention of Street's twin engined Escort was one that kept me coming back for a bit there. But its the variety and attitude o posters that keeps me coming back these days. So, so many awesome cars in the world, and people keep putting pics of things I've never seen before. I'm also trying to absorb some of the skills (welding, etc) people have by pressing my face against the screen. Its not working, and I just get funny looks from the missus

I was googling for car shows to go to and the gathering (when it was at Haynes) came up. I thought it looked good and decided to go and was amazed with the variety of cars, from bog standard to outrageous. The fact that there is such a variety makes it more interesting than one make shows (although I do still enjoy them).
