Here's the question, I can buy a 2004 Nissan primastar with mot for £100 from my uncle as it has issues. Firstly...small bit of welding and a suspension strut, both no problem to me. The main issue is the engine. Since he has had it, he has had nothing but problems, different sensors failing, boost problems,wiring loom issues, pump issues etc etc. And now it's given up completely.
I hate modern diesels and all the associated electrics that ALWAYS fail. My question is, can this be converted to mechanical injection, or is there an engine that will fit easily which is mechanical? I want it to convert to a campervan but I don't want the modern engine.

Its a 1.9 Renault engine in there, varied what type of management it had depending on power levels.
best bet is to weigh the bloody thing in tbh, or sell it to a van breaker, you'll get more than £100 for it :lol:

Is probably possible, people have worked out how to fully mechanical injection the mk6 transits, what pump does it use ?

I work with the m9r/m9t engine daily, truly terrible engines, constant seized injectors. Just throw it away

So telling me to scrap it or throw it away wasn't exactly what I asked :-\
I don't want to get rid, that's the whole point. Just the horrid modern engine. I like basic agricultural stuff that can be fixed or diagnosed in minutes by myself rather than with a computer at great expense

Most engine sensors are actually very cheap. Failing that, I don't know if the old Laguna 1.9 diesel will fit. But it's not agricultural. You'll struggle to make it into what you describe as 'old Skool'. You might be better off getting a transit.. |

Well i Just looked the pump up and it's a Bosch, unfortunately it doesn't look anything like a conventional pump! Apparently it's the same engine as a Vauxhall vivaro, maybe there is a forum for them where you may get more info on going mechanical?

yup, like I said, its a Renault common rail F9 engine in them whether it be a vivaro a traffic or a primastar.

Nevermind I'll ask somewhere else And like I said, there isn't an engine that will bolt in and be 'old Skool', you'll have to either repair it, sell it, or fit something archaic. Your call. I am trying to be helpful but this as helpful as we can be. You can't just kludge a diesel pump off a 50's truck on it and it work. It's not that simple, as I imagine you know. |

Can that engine be converted to mechanical injection or is there a engine that will bolt in fairly easily.
All I needed to know. Probably not the ideal place to have asked in the first place anyway ;-)

I think you've had some good replies here mate, I know that none of them have been as clear as "oh, you need a <such and such part number>, they're a tenner on eBay" replies but the answer is probably not that simple.
If the engine was a development of something that was, at some point in the past, completely mechanical then that would be a good starting point.
What diesel engines are you more familiar with?
Maybe get one of them measured for fitting and find out if you can use the original gearbox?
Bear in mind that it's a 2004 van so if you don't do an engine swap and manage to convert the 2004 engine to something more simple and less electronically monitored then you'll still be getting MOT'd as a 2004 van and might have trouble with the emissions.

Get yourself over to the Nissan Primastar owner's club site, that'll be full of guys doing exactly what you want to do. |

i looked into doing something like what you want to do a while ago because i could of got one of them vans cheap, never found anything about anyone doing one before. most of you problem is most people who own them vans are not the sort of people that play around wiv engines and fixing things so if they are not getting fixed at a garage they are scrapping them. anything is possible, my idea was to fit a mechanical lda pump and injectors if i could get them to fit the block if you could get it to run with them, which to be honest would be be a very slim. if it started you may have to modify the governor in the pump and injectors for more pressure to match the original. Or you could take an early engine and gearbox from something else fabricate engine mounts and drive shafts to suit. I don't think you will find any bolt on options for what you are looking for i couldn't and didn't want to spend the time on it. If you do i would be very interested in what you come up wiv. Also if you do get it going i believe vans after 2002 put out alot less emissions so you may never get it to pass an mot when finished.
