We built Lauren's Capri to be used daily, hence a fancy stereo, electric power steering, uprated brakes, central locking etc. Whilst it really only gets used in the summer because of how much effort we put in, but there's no reason you couldn't use one every day, they're very durable just need to be given some TLC and regular servicing/checks. I used to use my old Mk2 Escort everyday and it stood up to 50,000 miles in 4 years really well. They even make surprisingly good camping cars - nearly 1000 miles in a week and not a problem

I had a Mk3 1.6 Laser as a daily a few years ago, as others have said they are rather slow. I ended up with a 2.0i DOHC engine in it which went a damn sight better :-) Rust is the real killer, front panel and scuttle

I use my 2.0 Laser everyday, I do over 20000 a year in it. Go for a 5 speed car, they're more relaxed on the motorway. Mine has evolved a bit with polybushed 2.8i suspension all round, bigger brakes, an EFI head and Kent cam ( with the rest of the EFI in the garage to be fitted) a reasonable stereo system and the leather interior from a Cougar. Shortly to get 16" wheels I say go for it, they,re fun to drive and easy to keep

I used to use my mk2 escort daily. Around 600 miles a week. Dealt with modern traffic etc fine, and was a hoot to drive. 1760, port polished head big cam, twin 40s etc etc, mpg was dire but that was down to my driving style and route, hammer in an dipped well into single figures, sensible got about 17-20....miss the car in that incarnation.

1.6 performance is disappointing, but having said that they are still nice to drive.
