Hi, That's because that dates from the days when thrust bearings were carbon faced, so to sit with your foot on the clutch led to shortening there life considerably. Nowadays proper ball races are used and it's not such a problem. plus so as not to confuse they adopted the same procedure across the board. In a lot of ways these things are behind the times.

Driving instructors in the '80s used to push that neutral and handbrake thing with a manual box but as soon as I got my licence I reverted to using neutral and footbrake like all other normal people do here unless the handbrake is required to prevent roll-back on takeoff. I don't believe I've ever put an automatic in neutral in a queue of traffic or while waiting at an intersection. Can't see the point. It rather defeats the purpose of having an automtic. I like that my EN Civic has a torque converter trans cos it is good for moving trailers around in the yard and backing them up in tight spaces whereas my manual Falcon is a curse word for this cos of the heavy clutch and the long wheelbase. That said the front-tugger is less than ideal for towing stuff uphill on the farm even with the farm service lug tyres fitted.
