Maybe not the most retro of retro-rides but having owned a very early MK1 MX-5 for a few years now I've always wanted to tell the story of the car's development. Luckily the guys at XCAR liked the idea and we made this film showing the development and evolution of the MX-5 at a very wet Donington with a selection of MX-5s, two lovely Elans (I very nearly bought the red one) and an MGB. Apologies if it's a bit rough around the edges, I'm not a natural presenter! Feedback welcome please, we're still learning!

That's bloody ace! Never knew some of those little details about the original car, including the story behind the MX-5 name. I was trying to trace our old 92 Eunos recently, to no avail. I loved the RX8 engined mk1 - can't remember his name, but there's a member on here who is restoring his own mk1 which also runs a rotary - RX7 iirc. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent work. My mate at work has just bought an MX-5 (yesterday!) and I'll have to show him this, he'll love it

The rotary engined car cost a packet to build but was my favourite on the day.

I thought that was great. What comes across to me in all your videos is that you are petrolheads first and the presentation is not as polished as say Top Gear, but it is all the better for that as it has genuine warmth.

Thanks! We used to fret over script and presenting but it seems it's easier to produce (and to watch) when we work 'off the cuff'. It was easy with the MX-5 as we knew the cars and the story well, it's a bit harder with other stuff. There's another video in the edit now, there's a taster of what we did here > www.motorpunk.co.uk/features/roadtripping/aston-martin-vanquish-volante/ and a pic below (we're outside a mortuary!) Not a very RR kind of car (and I was strangely happy to give it back after a few days) but fun nonetheless. I really appreciate the feedback, thanks.

Cracking little vid. Really enjoyed it. I bought my mk1 mx5 to do up over a summer whilst driving it a bit, then sell on in the spring. 4years, 50k, a couple of front wings and a bit of welding later, it is still in my ownership! I've got a supercharged polo g40 and an e36 bmw 325 also, but the keys I pick up most often are the ones to the mx5. Yes it is slower than both the polo and the 325, but there is just something about the mx5. I love the fact it is cheap to run (35 mpg isn't bad for a car that gets driven hard imo), it never breaks and even when it does it still gets you home. Smiles per mile, I don't think the mx5 can be bettered.

Lads, that's a super feature. As above, you come across as proper car nuts, but you still let the car be the feature. The presenting style is fine BTW : I'd happily watch the pair of you appreciate other motors, so I hope you have more coming. Very, very well done.

as an MX5 owner I feel I need to be critical slightly, you covered the MK1 well enough, mostly skipped on the mk2, briefed upon the rest but emphasised mostly on modded MX5s otherwise good!!

We're car nuts first, presenters second, as you can see Yes, there is one in the edit suite now, a few more planned for this autumn-winter, and if you're really bored you can see others we've already done here: www.motorpunk.co.uk/video/ (The Lotus 7 story is my fave).

Yeah - We didn't do that much on the MK2 but it was really hard to cram everything in, and the MK2 isn't that different to the mk1 really. We filmed the lot in one day (!)

it never breaks and even when it does it still gets you home. Weirdly, my own car (the silver one) snapped it's belt on the A38 a few weeks after filming this, the first breakdown I've had in many years!

Brilliant video, top work! I've always fancied an MX5, but never bought one because they're so expensive. A basic early MX5 in average condition will set you back at least $7000 in Australia!

Thanks Waveman! I can post you mine in instalments, large rusty lumps drop off regularly! AUD $7000 gets you MK3 MX-5 here! That said, I'd swap our cheap cars for your great weather, we got bloody soaked filming! Our other videos are here if you're interested: www.motorpunk.co.uk/video/

Great little education I got there tdk, thanks! Somewhat ironically the chief editor and one of the photographers from XCar are old school friends. Small world it is!
