little walkthrough of what ive been up to this week. I realise the end result is not perfect and still needs laquer and polishing but its a big improvement... 1 - Started off with rear boot BMW roundel (which are hard to get hold of as a replacement) it looked like this: On through the stages of stripping and masking and painting.... and am left with this.... once laquered and polished and fitted i'll show the finished product Bit of a boring updated granted, but thought some folk might be interested in not just chucking away old stuff but giving a bit of a refurb where possible

On to more interesting things, this weekend I swapped over the front control arm bushes for a brand new set, curing the wobble under braking from 60ish and quietening down the front end over bumps. I'm sure it has had a positive effect on turn in too, but its hard to tell as its not exactly the last word in handling finesse even brand new! I also have a set of rear pitman arms to replace as i noticed a degree of lateral movement from the rear when accelerating, turning and hitting a bump in the road (like a bumpy motorway sliproad etc..) so i figure i'll swap these out to cure that. That just leaves new shocks and spring and rear trailing arm bushes and the suspension refresh will be done, but i'm in no real rush. Have some pictures of my efforts...

Today this happened : This became this: And these: went in its place result is much tighter handling on bends/bumps underload, I hadnt really noticed how much rear end wandering there had been till I swapped these out, they were pretty loose Ignore the fact that the flash has made the rear end look like those photos of the Titanic under the sea, its really nothing like as bad in the flesh!

Little jobs, but certainly major improvements!
Still loving it Tim? Funnily enough I was asked where this had gone the other day by a neighbour, who had only just noticed I had sold it !

Yesterday I picked up a set of front struts which are going to GAZ later this year to be converted into custom height adjustable coilovers, matched with fixed height rears. I also picked up and fitted a full set of dashboard wood trim, so i'm up to SE spec inside now (excuse the poor quality images)

So I got a set of chrome mirrors from Bigsaloon off here before purchasing i knew one was split so I decided to do a little refurb... This was the result: Mirror with split So i dismantled the case and removed the motor assembly and the plastic insert leaving me with this: bit of plastic welding and flexible filler later and we have this: metal section filled with epoxy and now all ready for paint: metal will be painted with alclad chrome finish as used by modellers I know its not perfect but with the glass back in and on the car I think you'll not notice that it was once smashed

Nicely done. They will look awesome on your E23. Don't scrap the Series II mirrors. All E23 bits are rare now. I used my E23 to go to a lunch the other day. Afterwards I gave a lift to someone who was very complementary about the E23 and the big old slab of real timber on the dashboard, in front of the passenger. The sheer roominess of the E23 cockpit is a joy compared with the E30 I normally use. Long live smelly old E23s and their eccentric owners

Yes i'll be keeping the s2 mirrors as mine are perfect with no carpark scars etc...
Should hopefully have these on the car in a couple of weeks once I bother getting the right size drill bits to drill the extra hole in the door as it seems that despite being an early s2 (with no side repeaters in wings etc...) it has the later doors with only 2 holes

I'm loving that wood trim. I used to own an '84 728i manual, many, many years ago. Cost me £400, was fairly tidy and everything worked. I think it's long gone now, I picked up an E24 635 CSi and when the MOT ran out on the E23 it got parked up and sat there for months. I sold it as a pair with the E24, it was the persuasion I needed to part with the E23 as it sweetened the deal nicely and moved a large E23 shaped lump of metal off my parking space. Great things to drive, we used mine for football awaydays a lot. It was even blue for Ipswich Town.
With a manual box the 728i was quite nippy for a big old hector, and always received positive comments. It certainly neither looked or felt like a £400 car.
For a short period I had both the E23 and the E24 on the road together, now there's a nice decision to make everytime you leave the house. Is Sir feeling wafty or sporty today?

Haha yeah a nice pair of 3.5 23s and 24s would be great, esp if the 24 was manual and the 23 auto.
Ive been wondering about a manual swap improving performance, which as you say, isn't bad, but i'll likely wait to see if this engine dies the put an m30b35 from a 5 series in with a manual box

Test fitting 9.5s on the front with a 15mm spacer camber when lowered should see it clear the arches with suitable tyres, and then it will have officially been 'ruined' but with OE wheels and OE shocks in the shed it can go back to standard for future generations to admire (possibly)
