Hi all,
Got a question for any eBay experts on here.
I'd been negotiating via email over a car on another website, not eBay, but the guy said he has been sent to Scotland for work for sixth months and the car is in storage in London. I'm more than happy with the price that's been agreed, but as he's so far away from the car and I'm so far away from both of them he wants to privately list the car as a buy it now on eBay and send me the private link to complete the sale. This is how he says it works:
- Make the listing private - Send me the link - I have to pay eBay (not him) for the car. - eBay confirm to him that they have received the funds - He arranges delivery of the car to me - When I receive the car I have 10 days to inspect it - Once I confirm I'm happy with it, I instruct eBay to forward the funds on to him.
Is this kosher or is it a scam? It's not something I've come across before. Alarm bells are ringing, but he says he needs a definite answer before he arranges a listing as it will cost him.
Cheers

Seems dodgy. It's just the rest of the conversation prior to this seemed very normal, and not your usual "scammer" speak and if the payment is not clearly going through eBay how is anyone going to fall for it?

doest seem dodgy it is dodgy, 100% if you buy it you will loose your money and have no car delivered to you, its a well established scam. All this stuff, ebay does not do.
You would be sent to a link to a fake/clone ebay site, they would than have all your details.

Sounds suspect to me. If he can arrange delivery of the car why mess about with ebay listings? It will cost him a small fortune in fees if he does it that way. I suspect the car doesn't exist. It's one of those adverts using pictures pinched from somewhere else. Ebay payments surely go through Paypal rather than Ebay itself. If payment was through Paypal, with payment deferred until after delivery, then that would sound a bit more genuine.

I think it's a scam, but easy way to find out, tell him a mate from this very forum who lives in London will be happy to take a look at the car.
See what he says...............

It's a scam, 100%
It's the same scam they used on gumtree when listing puppies.
They say the car / puppy is in one place (at a lower than usual cost) You reply, they give you bull curse word........
Had to move Got a divorce Work placement Etc
They say lodge the money with eBay, courier, etc and it will only be complete when you inspect and confirm receipt etc.
The goods do not exist, you won't get anything but ripped off.
I find these ads all the time and contact them, wind them up and get them removed.
Contact them, when they say they gave moved (for what ever reason) say I know where you are I have a family member near there.......... Who's a sgt in the police station you'll get him to pop over

Its a scam. Ebay do not take payments, paypal deal with that but there is no function that allows a 'hold payment' until you confirm you are happy. AFAIK private listings can only be done following a second chance offer.
