Hi guys, I brought this bike as the pictures below (Ie. bits) approx four years ago now as something to keep me off the streets while I was unemployed. This didn't happen as I started my own business and never got round to starting the project. I've made it my mission to sort out all of my projects this year. The projects are my Mini 35, MX5, Jetta and the Kawasaki. The plan is I'm going to give the Kawasaki to my little lad when it's finished. As you can see, it needs a full rebuild. The frame is rot free, just some surface rust, but the rear wheel is seized in place. I have basicly two of everything (tank, mud flaps, handle bars, etc.) and two engines, the 50cc and the 80cc. The only bits missing are a kick start, the ignition module/coil and about three nuts on the one engine. First things first, I need to get my mini moved a bit to get to everything. Going to make sure nothing has gone astray from either of the engines and I'll build one of them up. Not sure which yet but I think all of the gaskets/bearings I need are the same for either engine. If anyone has any pointers or advice, I'd love to hear from you as this will be my first bike rebuild. Also, if anybody has any information on the bikes, I'd love to know as I have very little (two workshop manuals) and the internet doesn't have a lot about them. Cheers

The ae was the trail version, there was a road version called the ar, the 50 cc was fully restricted so would advise using the 80 cc engineas this produced a respectable amount of power. Sorry but I cannot give a great deal of help as my dealings with these were quite limited, a friend had an AR 50 which was severely gutless another had an AE 80 which would shift quite well, also remember reading about an AR 50 used for moped racing by a Kawasaki team but they had access to a range of non uk parts to get it going well. Afaik the 80s never sold that well, 16 year olds had mopeds then changed to 125 when they turned 17. Ttfn Glenn

Most of the AR50's i knew of somehow ended up as AR100's (big bore kit for the 80!) at which point they used to get reasonably well for a bike that was supposed to max out at 30mph, i've never seen a AE model before though, is it going on the road or round the fields?

Ohhh wow!!!! I had a red AE50 in 1990 when I was 16 ,B165 MRS, it ended up getting pinched and torched but I had an amazing 10 months with that bike that I'll never forget. I'll keep an eye on this thread. If you get bored with this project mate give me a shout I might take it of your hands.

Cheers guys. I had read the 50's maxed out at about 30mph. My lad will be six by the time it's all finished so I don't want him to have too much power, but I might just go for the 80cc and restrict it until he's more comfortable.
It'll be used in the fields and on the track. We've got loads round here. The AE's have no lights, dials, switches, etc. on them at all, they stripped these right down and left the rest on the AR road models.

The AE was a road bike too mate, just designed in an "offroad" style, they had switches lights and dials same as the AR (although a different style i think). They had a unit on the handlebars with the ignition key, speedo and a blue light for full beam and also lights for the indicators if I remember correctly.

I think thats going to be way too big/ heavy for a 6 year old to manage (correct me if i'm wrong) as it looks about the size of a Suzuki TS50, Yamaha DT50, you would be better of with something like a PW50 or 80 or even a TY80 although at 6 he might struggle with the clutch and gears. Watch out where you ride, its not like it used to be, the fun police have got helicopters now and they're pretty difficult to lose

The workshop manuals and photos I've seen of the AE models have no guages or lights at all. The ignition was just a key at the side of the engine too. Will have to re-check the books. He's six months away from being six and he's 4' 2" and built like a brick lavatory. I don't think he'll have a problem with it. If he does, I can always just keep it until he is suitable. All the places I'd go are the legal off road tracks too, there are a few make-shift ones that keep appearing but I wouldn't go there, as you say, the law don't take kindly to pratting round on them. The amount of Chinese deathtraps you see being wheeled to said places, just wouldn't want to.

Here's a good pic of one, you can see the square clock pod on the handlebars tucked behind the wee plastic visor bit above headlight. I don't think my bike had the plastic headlight surround but it may have been taken off before I had it. They came standard with lights and indicators. Conveniently if you forgot your keys the ignition could be switched on with a pen knife haha. This lead to mine being stolen unfortunately. When I had it I was always a little bit jealous of my mates with their fancy new DT 50's and TSX 50's which were a little bit cooler in 1990, looking back I reckon the AE was the best of the bunch, it was an odd looking thing and I've never seen another one since Cheers for sharing your project on here, this has genuinely brought back a lot of great memories for me

HAHA! I was looking at that picture about an hour ago and never even noticed the guages/lights. I love the style of the 80's bikes, especially the off road ones. I really brought it for myself but I am far to large for it! I'll relive my youth though the lad I'm going to get into the garage tomorrow and dig the bits out.
