And thanks everyone and those who have PM'd me. It also seems i have some interest if i was to ever sell her. I would have no idea as to how to put a value on her as i rarely see them for sale these days. The odd one crops up but its either mint or a race prepped one. Silly money.
I do need to get the clutch done and do other engine work so the lump is coming out this summer with a hoist. Id like to get an MOT test done as well and see what is needed. Last MOT was over 26 years ago!
I do have a cruchy second gear and the clutch feels very heavy with a high bite. The thrust bearing is whinning like hell too. I'm going to try the clutch first and see how it drives then. Ill change the engine oil too and see if that will help the box a little. I did change the oil a few years ago but its probably mixed with the old retro stuff now and could do with changing again with a filter.
Some exterior parts are needed as well but i wouldnt know where to source them and my french is terrible so understanding a french forum can only be done via google translate. Takes time.
Thinking further on id like to also fit a fatter carb to the engine and keep the original dry stored. I just fancy some light engine mods and bring her up a little bit on power. I do plan on a suspension mission too!

I had a quick nose around the Samba the last time we were in France, as the owner had dragged it out of his barn and freed off the brakes. He took it for a spin and got it certified (not sure what they call it over in France but it is now back on the road). Although very dusty having been stored in his barn forever and a day, it looks to be in absolutely amazing, almost timewarp condition. Just a couple of dangs/scrapes on the bumpers here and there. The interior is unmarked and complete, with a period tape deck and even rear seat belts (which surprised me), and i couldn't find any rust on any of the body work or under the arches. I haven't been under the carpets or back seat or anything like that, but i did pop the boot open and lifted the carpet lining in there at the edges on either side where they join the rear arch and suspension mounts, and the paint in those areas looks literally factory fresh. Same goes for in the engine bay - everything looks spangly and new and the owner confirmed it has the largest European spec engine in it. Totally gobsmacking condition. I am heading back over for another DIY marathon from June-August so i will try to get some more pictures of it. I would LOVE it, and he doesn't want that much for it either, but the wife seems to despise the styling. She absolutely hates it in fact, so i might be punching smoke a bit on this one....

I see this is for sale for 500 notes on eBay. Seems a bargain! Yes it is. I'm moving on to other projects and I've tried to price is correctly to reflect no MOT even though it's almost there. I've just ran out of time. She prime for use and enjoyment so hopefully she'll go to a good owner. Thats more important to me in finding the right owner really
