Always had a soft spot for Mini's. My first car was a 1962 Mini Minor 850 (4074 KR) complete with 1300 GT engine and Cosmic alloys. I didn't understand why it wouldn't start on the key, till my Dad pointed out the floor mounted starter! Doh! I'll be watching this with interest. You have got to love a mk1. My first attempt at concours was with a 1964 Mk1 850 SDL. I sold it about 2003/4 to a guy in America who promptly sold it on for a lot more to this kid. Unfortunatly I have had many computers since then so that is the only pic I have which was sent to me from when it arrived in the USA. Back then I thought I had sold it for good money but if I still had it now it would be worth a fair chunk more. You carn't keep them all though.

Well I ain't updated this for a few weeks so here goes. First up was to trim the new cill to a suitable size and fit. Then welded in, also notice the genuine battery box fitted. I had brought a pattern part but the fit was shocking so I lashed out on a genuine one. I cannot take credit for any welding as a mate who used to work in a body shop does the welding, I do the rest. While Jim was welding those on I cleaned the rear seat belt mounts up, the originality geeks will spit there Babysham all over the keyboard when these go in. We had to make some pieces for the front arch to meet the new cill. New skid plates New rear valence closing panel, the previous repair here was a joke. We also made a little filler piece as the wings are pattern the fit aint perfect. Bare metal now under the front arch as best as I get it anyway. Top half all done. So had a bit of a tidy up and got it ready to flip over.

Not much progress on this. I am sick of it really I want to get on with painting the underside I have had enough of this paint removal now. I have managed to remove the paint from the floor now to reveal some poor repairs on the sill. This side has the original sill and is quite good at the rear. The front is not so good Poor repair with an arc welder The heel board is really good and this is the only repair needed anywhere near it

Also got this pic to show the difference in 2 different cans of acid etch primer brought from the same paint supply place I use. On a plus point I got the bike taxed and cleaned for the summer. At least I have something for summer as this Mini is not going anywhere soon.

Far be it for me to criticise your build, especially the quality of execution, but you will regret those cover-sills in the future.
Good job on the wire/pipe retainers, it's details like this which many miss during a rebuild
The "skid-plates" are called Slinging shoes, which is where the body was mounted on the travelling bogies used on the production line. They serve no other purpose. Again nice to see them going back on.
Phil.

I hear what your saying with the sills and I did consider doing it as per original but as this won't see a wet road in my ownership I doubt it will be a problem. I also think this way looks better.

Good effort with the floorpans, it's slow depressing work but worth it in the end!

Well I have done a bit on this today. Firstly since my last update I have got some more primer on the underside. Then today I have been stripping the subframes that came with the shell. I had previously stripped the ones off the doner car but they were both ditched as the rear was rusty and the front was bent slightly but fortunatly I think both these that came with the car will go again. I am getting close to being ready for the powder coaters and chrome platers as far as the underside parts go so will try and have everything ready next time I have a tinker.

Well only 18 months since my last update! I would love to tell you I have done loads of work and just not updated the thread but unfortunately this has taken a back seat over the last 12 months due to the fiesta getting my spare time and repairs on daily drives in-between along with other general spannering on moderns, one of which left me with a free Toyota Yaris but now it's fixed I wish I hadn't bothered as it owes me £600 which is nearly what its worth. Its not a bad car which my Mrs mate has had since new but I really have no use for it. Anyway I got myself a new daily which as good as it is I just don't feel it and carn't see it staying long. I should have kept the B5 1.8T but that was not upto towing the caravan as well as I would like but for everything else it was better than this current B6 2.0TDI Getting to the point I went round a mates yesterday to help him assemble the rear end of his mini that we stripped 6 years ago! Crazy how quick that went by. At the end of the day it was 80% back together and looking good, my mate first got this car rebuilt 20 years ago and the quality of the build is evident after all this time it is as fresh as it was back then. On my return home I thought I need to get on with my mini so this morning I was in the garage and decided I needed to get the subframes ready for the powder coaters. The front subframe has suffered at the hands of clueless monkey and the front engine stabiliser bracket had been snapped in half which I can only assume was because the bolt was seized. Anyway I dressed off what was left of the old one. Then I cut a template out of card of what the bracket should look like. Fit is quite good Then I cut it out of steel. It is quite thick gauge and I run the dremmel cutting disc across where I needed the bend to try and help myself getting a neat bend/finish. First time and a good fit. I dug the magnet out to get it square. I just needed to put the hole in the middle now for the bolt. As the old bracket was broken I have guessed slightly where it should be but I have put a 12.5mm hole through to give me a bit of play and the engine side has an elongated hole so it should be all good. All welded and good for the powder coaters now. I plan on some steady progress going forward as I really need this back on its wheels as a minimum due to thinking about selling the house and it would be much easier to move on wheels.

Well it has been a long time since I did anything with this mini. Yesterday I had an hour spare so I had a tidy up so I could get to it. Then it was off with the front panel. I then had to clean off the remaining bits of metal being held by the spot welds. I have still got the other side to do. I was never happy with the front panel and I happened across a genuine NOS one about 18 months ago and I think I would regret it if I painted it with the original one still on. I think the front panel was £45 off a local mini specialist who I have known for years.

Thanks. Just had half hour dressing the passenger side. The new panel. I am going to clean up inside the front arches a bit next before the front panel goes in while I have a little more access.

Very little has been done on this but I managed to collect the seats I need for it. I have got 2 other minis at the moment which are kind of stopping progress on the gt. This 79 will be sold once it has mot. I only bought it as I wanted some bits that came with it. Got this one to use while I build the gt.

Thanks. Not sure what project binky is but I bet it gets built quicker than this Gt. With the weather as bad as today I was limited as to what I could do. On getting home from work at midday I was greeted with a delivery of a badge/sticker I had been waiting for. It is for a period steering wheel I scored cheap off ebay and that spurred me on to tidy it up. The centre badge that was on the wheel was an Austin one and mine is a Morris so that had to go. I had already stripped the boss of paint and polished it but previous centre I had bought was not the best quality so I had put it to one side. First off I sanded all the paint of and went up the grades of sand paper. Then I masked up the original leather to protect it from the polishing wheel. Then I gave it a good polish and cleaned the leather along with bolting the boss back on. I need to feed the leather once fitted but with the cooper s buried at the back of the garage that will have to wait unfortunately.

Managed to dig the S out and fit the steering wheel. I have temporarily pinched the wheels off it as the tyres on the yellow are about 20 years old so in an attempt to get an mot the S wheels have gone onto that.

I have watched all 20 episodes over the last month. That will be a weapon once finished and apart from the huge arches I like it but I don't think they could have avoided them being the size they are when you consider the running gear they have used. I have small progress. I picked the subframes up from the powder coaters this afternoon. I have also dropped a few bits off for chrome plating but they say I am looking at February before I get them back! I didn't expect to have to wait that long.
