So a mate has just turned this up in a barn. Ive found out its a Moss Monaco from the fact its got a Triumph Herald chassis and engine. Looks like it was probably a kit car but any more info is patchy.... anyone know anything about them? I am assuming this is a genuine car, I don't see any reason to build a rep of a kit car?

Herald based kit car. My mate built one with a hot Rover V8 in, possibly the most frightening thing i've ever driven.

Yup. 'tis also a Monaco, but a Ford-based one judging by the front ARB. I always thought them an ugly b*****d, but perhaps now looking retro. They never were one of the better respected kits. It won't be worth much, so could be cheap fun for you or your mate if that's where you're coming from.
I agree with shagracer on the 25 grand one. It needs to have a MacLaren engine to come close.

You know you get belly tank salt flats racers? This looks for all the world like the British equivalent using an old immersion heater tank.

Fell out of my chair when saw the car picture on line just now.
I owned this car in about 1998-1999. It came from Seaford before me and I sold it to a gent in Caterham.
Moss Monacos were for spitfire/vitesse/herald body replacements or you could buy a chassis from them for a ford pinto engine. They were an 80's era kit. There were other kits made by Moss - the Malvern was one , I think, which had a roof and was aimed at looking a bit like a Morgan. Moss went bust though, they were based near Bath.
I have the registration number of the Monaco if you need it, the engine number was present but the chassis number was binned when it was made. Sadly it is a Q plate. I had a right row with DVLA as tried to get the original plate back on it.
I added the "1" on the front, radiator catch tank, spring catches to the bonnet, land-rover indicators/brake lights/reflectors and number decals. The wheels are MK1 golf "made to fit" with spacers. Front brakes are from a Standard 8
Car was a real joy to drive, topped out about 75 being a 1200 but felt a lot quicker. Handling was "tricky" to say the least. Lack of roll cage, side impact protection, air bags, crumple zone or any safety gear what-so-ever concentrates the mind somewhat. Still fun though.
Looks like it has been well enjoyed, If you/your mate are thinking about selling it I would have it back anyday.
All the best
Tim

Hi, you can see from the post above I said I owned the car back in about 2002. I left it with my then girlfriend who then sold it....:-(
Would be interested in getting it back , but I know its not run for probably at least 15 years , if not more....
Have left a phone message for you so perhaps you could get back to me when you can? many thanks, Frank
p.s. the picture on the left is from when I owned it before. :-)
p.p.s extra pictures now added.
