I've still got a couple of mk5b Escorts that are temporarily laid up (9 years and 5 years). But I haven't the heart to get rid of them. Like most thing I'll keep slowing tinkering on them and get them done one day.

When I was a kid in the 70's if someone in the street got a new car (even if it was second hand) it was a big deal and every one would look round it. Anybody who already had a car would spend part of their life under the bonnet or riveting patches to the floor and making it look like it had been welded! By doing this people formed a bond with their car and felt it was special. Then something happened in the 80's, Finance became freely available and car ownership rocketed. This I think stopped cars being special. When you don't have to put as much effort into affording a car they become disposable and the bond you once had is lost. Nobody weeps when they loose a Bic pen do they! The other big factor that prevents post 80's cars becoming as bigger hit as their predecessors is plastic. Plastic become brittle over time and I bet there is countless people out there struggling to find that wheel arch, bumper or door handle to complete a restoration.

The childish side of me giggled at vaj on your mk5 registration Ha ha, yep, we all knew it as the "VAJ" - was so tempted to move the plate to the new track car but there was only 1 VAJ!

Love that video and the shine on that GTI.
I started with an Escort 1300XL estate. Owned it from 1979 to 1996 when I sold it for just £400. Had full Mexico running gear and perfect bodywork and minilites as well. So stupid no to have let it go. As family cars have had 3 x Mk3 1600 Ghias and a brand new (company car) GTI estate in radiant red.
Now have another GTI estate in red of course that I'm refurbing plus a SI estate as a parts runner, along with some French cars for the family to use.

I like the GTi estates.
Such a shame Ford didn't use the 130bhp engine in them to give them just a little bit more ooomph.

This is what it was listed as on ebay This is what was under the skirts. The rear panel behind the bumper was mostly fibreglass and underseal. But, on the plus side, the best interior i've seen on any GTIs recently and the arches and mechanics are all excellent. I picked up this silver SI with 3 previous owners, loads of history, MOT until end of the year and with ghia bits and bobs for just £270 off Gumtree a few weeks back. I will use it whilst the red one is in bits. Finally here's a rubbish picture (but almost all I have) of my original red GTI

I've currently got my mk5 Escort saloon undercover which I plan on using in a few years time when my Mondeo is past her best. Ive had it a couple of months and is 1 owner from new, with FFSH and only 43k miles on the clock and is near mint!! I plan on fitting some Puma alloys (which I've already bought),dropping it and fitting a nice exhaust. As it has the Zetec engine, I think it will make a reliable Retro daily in a few years time!!

What's this called in Escort speak? 1.8 turbo, 4WD. Hugely popular but unsure what they're called in Escort terms...

That's a model we didn't get here, is it a Laser, for the Australian market? Was it basically a rebadged Mazda?

Mk3 and 4 Escorts are going through the roof, s1 turbos are making more than mk2 rs2k for the right car, here's a few of mine, Had this 3 years, done 31k, 1 previous owner fsh My mk4 ghia done 21k fsh 82 XR3 carb done 44k with history, Car is now undergoing a concours resto, current looks more like this 3 years ago it wouldn't have been worth putting the kind of money into this car that i have but with prices the way they are i might even break even...lol...of course no one builds cars like this to make profit Last one i have is this early mk4 project, next on my very long list of things to do To be fair this one is in a pretty poor state but it's one of the oldest (barely) surviving mk4 xr3i's in the uk, it was built in Germany in jan 86, bear in mind press fleet were only registered in February with retail sales starting March 86, not sure i'd want to sink bucket loads of money into a resto, maybe in a few years if prices keep heading North

Davexroc - That's some beauties you have there and I'm very jealous!! I know most people say that it's not worth spending "x" amount on a particular car because it'll cost more than the car is worth but after its done and complete, you'll have a beautiful, reliable car that is different to everything else on the road!!

Thanks Nobby, the silver xr3 we are doing has been built on a no expense spared basis, we could have cut loads of corners on this but i know it would have bitten me in the long run, fingers crossed it will be finished later this year

Some great cars now getting posted...those 'foreign' ones are so odd to my eyes. Here's a few more of mine. This Escort 1300XL I owned from '79 until '96 when I sold it for just £400, pretty much as you see it but had been garaged for two years. Originally purple velvet, I resprayed it midnight blue (popular on Mk2's at the time) and added Mexico wings and running gear. It was ziebarted from new so pretty solid. Next is our Mk3 1600 Ghia. This was my mum's company car and we had it from '86 until about 1990 when it was written off. By chance we parked behind her 'sister' when taking our kids to the park.
