I'm still fighting with my conversion ,its a runner but i need inspiration to pick the tools back up. what systems have you nailed onto your engines.the rougher and more basic the better   |

Rover P6, with an early 90's Rover twin cam engine, n/a 10:1 high compression with a single Garrett T25 blowing through a pair of SU carbs, ignition controlled by Megajolt   Simple but effective  |

yeah, that makes me smile loads!!!! did you need to modifiy the su's so you could blow through them? just curious as mine is bolted to the turbo face in a suck thru set up. if i can blow through it i can fit an intercooler too which would change things greatly.

All I did was buy a matched pair of Rover V8 HIF44 SU's, and fitted Montego turbo needles, springs and seals, and silicon'd the dash tops to the body to help hold the pressure in. It runs a bit rich under boost I think because I'm running twins rather than a single carb. There appears to be very little difference between normal SU's and turbo SU's, I think the main difference is an o-ring between the dash top and main body which is why I silicon'd mine up. You'll need a decent intake plenum, either a proper Metro/Montego plenum or do some research and make your own so it still works under pressure.

Renault 5 gt turbo carbs work well I believe with the jet drilled out slightly lol Think they are soles from memory |

You need a restrictor (which the SU plenums have designed into them) as otherwise once you get on-boost, it'll just lean out, and you won't get any power whatsoever  IIRC, someone on the turbo mini forum found out a flat bit of plate with something around a 36mm hole, did the same job as the restrictor in the plenum |

not that id know of. it was a kit that was originally fitted to a limo granada 7 seater and was just to add a little extra when 7 up.came with no ignition system nor engine partss at all.
turbo technics rebuilt it for me.........they took a small fortune for the work too but i heard they were the best.
problem i have at the moment is that i can drive for miles off boost with no issues at all,give it a little wellie
and it leaks oil. ive changed the sump,sump gasket,fitted a pressure strip around the sump bolts,changed the inlet manifold gasket,sealed the block where the dizzy drops in and it still leaks. I'm guessing the turbo has been built to a dif spec than to
what it was previously. now I'm dreading that i need low comp pistons or heads and i cant afford that. the rover set up above looks real tidy,I'm guessing it was nailed together by someone with a pretty good idea what they were doing........................................unlike me.
can i drop the boost down by getting a different wastegate fitted??

Where's it leaking oil from? If the turbo hasn't got carbon seals it'll leak oil into the inlet stream and smoke like a good un.

All I've done is tried to copy the standard Metro/Montego turbo system, I've had problems with the turbo dumping oil through the inlet and exhaust (which has since been overhauled), and the breather system not being up to scratch causing the crankcase to pressurise and burn more oil.
I still need a little tweak on the hose sizes from the catch can into the inlet as I think it's still too small but apart from that it runs well enough. Made about 170bhp and 200lb/ft at 7psi with the turbo dumping oil everywhere.

Hmmmmmm....I'm looking at the 1.4 abd I've got sat in the garage, and I've just realised my mate will have a spare T25 after he converts his 2.0 rover to T28. I need to learn how to weld up a manifold |

oil looks like its getting out of evrywhere lol.rebuild by tt cost in excess of £300 so i would like to think its got the right bits in ,but i wouldnt know by looking. the oil drips down around the bottom of the engine. gasket is good and so is the sump. oil lines are tight and blanking plate (where mech fuel pump was) is sealed with a blanking plate and gasket.
it runs along the bottom of the sump but its def not gettinmg out the rocker cover gaskets anywhere.
theres no smoke at all from the engine and everything is nice and quiet.ill be lookng back over the oil return pipe to check for splits or cuts but teh oil is all around the bottom of the engine. there is always some dripping off teh bottom of the starter motor too. ive (with help) had the box and clutch out and its not running out the rear seal.
I'm wondering if the guy at tt rebuilt it to suit a modern set up instead of for the simple fitment on my set up. shouldnt he of checked the turbines though?? I'm wondering (as i don't know anything for sure) if the turbo is pushing too much in and is pressurising the sump area spraying oil out wherever it can?? i just don't know.
would love to hear a turbo'd beetle!!!!!!

When you say it leaks oil - where from? Does it burn it or is it weeing out somewhere? On a draw through set up like yours, you need better seals on the turbo shaft or the vacumn of a closed throttle can draw oil past the turbo shaft/seals and into the inlet - smokey! If you need to drop the CR, Ferriday Engineering do decompression plates and thicker gaskets. Way easier and cheaper than replacing pistons! How are you igniting it? |

I must say I have never seen a set up like the original posters.
Sending a fuel mixture through the turbo sounds wrong to me.
O.P; you say you tried to copy the montego setup but I'm pretty sure it wasn't setup like that?
The set up you have looks like you will struggle to get any decent reliable power/use out of it.
I'm sure the turbo rebuilders would have rebuilt it so it performs its best on a regular setup. Not the way you have it.
Call them and tell them how you have built your conversion and I'm sure they will give you all the advice you need.

It sounds like you are pressurising the block, the one thing you haven't mentioned fixing or testing is the breather system. |

draw through setups work ok, common on vw stuff and on the renault 5 gordini, it came from factory like it. Draw through turbos do need to have carbon seals to stop the oil getting sucked out of the turbo and into the inlet track of the engine. blowing oil out of everywhere sounds like over pressure of the crank case. do you vent to atmosphere? not got boost blowing in through a breather or something silly?

theres not really much of a breathing system,the oil filler cap has a metal wool type of packing at the top as standard but the n/s rocker cover just has a pcv valve. this runs to a catch can and then into the front of the inlet system just behing the su.
its only plumbed like this as (me having no knowledge regarding turbos) assumed that this was how to plumb it in. i could disconnect the line from the catch can to the turbo and just run into a breather filter though and block the pipe that feeds into the inlet. there the only places i can see where the cologne can breath.ill call turbo technics during the week to see if they keep a record of what work they have done and ask if mine has the seals. i did explain the set up to the guy there as i presumed it was a more rare type of system.

Ive been thinking about it for a while.
I'm certainly not gonna get my dough back or anything to say the least when it comes to selling my wife's/kids bus Daewoo Matiz MK1.
So why not keep it and inject a turbo into thee old 799cc engine.
I wouldn't know where to start but I'm sure a professional could hook me up for under £1k.
I've also wanted exhausts pipes coming out of the front wings, it gets me so excited just thinking about it....
