1.6 import or 1.8 are worth it. The UK 1.6 is only about 80bhp and useless (IMO) no its not, that's the later 1.6's (I think the later 1.6 imports are also the lower power too). Earlier (pre 93 I think) uk 1.6's are the same 115BHP as the imported ones

Bit modern, but a Lexus IS200 could be an idea.

Ford sierra? Bit basic (less to go wrong) but would do everything you want and good ones are well within your budget. Good parts back up (as well as oem upgrade parts from higher spec model's), and pretty much anything you could ever want to know about them has been covered endless times on the internet

I guess the main question that hasn't been answered is 'Why RWD?', because if the answer is 'something I can have a fun drive in occasionally' then it's going to rule out some of more 'pedestrian' suggestions.

you can get towbars for the mx5 and fit a tow bar mounted bike carrier to that and it will also tow a small box trailer without to much hassle. the 1.6 or 1.8 argument has been discussed in length on mx5nutz and mx5oc websites but would seem its down to personal preference. i have a import 1.6 which is standard and it goes well, even two up i can keep up with the 1.8's but I'm always revving the nuts of it to do it( which the engine seems to love anyway)

Cheers guys been at work sorry. Yeah I would like something a bit fun hence the rwd. Is200 is nice but a bit too complex for my liking. I totally forgot the Sierra but yeah that is a good possibility. What are they Ilike in terms of of reliability? Manta is proper cool but I think they may be a bit high maintenance due to the age and it might be hard to get one.
I think ideally I would like an mx5 but a 525 is a serious contender now and I'm still considering the option of a Sierra 924 or volvo.
I totally forgot about the tax. I was going on modern capacity. But they were only in two brackets before Weren't they?

Sierra's are pretty much bomb proof in my experience, been running mine for about 18 months and the only time it's ever broke down was due to the alternator failing. As 'youths' me and my mates had a few and we only managed to kill one and that was due to a failed head gasket, could of been easy fixed but back then they were so cheap it was easier to just buy another
as with a lot of older fords rust is the main issue to check for, but they seem to either be really good or really bad. I'm still chasing welding around mine that needed doing when I bought it

I do like the tourings but not sure on the newer models. It would have to be the 316 or 318 and at my price range I'm assuming it would be a bit of a dog. They're not newer, E30 Touring ran from '88 to '94, E34 tourer ran from '92 to '96, so they're pretty much concurrent. E30 touring can be had within your budget for a good one. Easier to get a good E34 touring within that budget but the E30 is still possible, especially in 316 guise. They rust worse than the E34. For both, parts are very easy to get, all the factors do them and there are ten trillion breakers out there. Insurance wise I would say either a 316i Touring or a 518i Touring, but they're both dead. The 318i or 520i have a little bit more poke, and might do a bit better without being too insurance pricey. If you could stretch the 325i or 525i Tourings are great things. Or get an Omega or Carlton estate. Avoid the BMW insurance hike altogether and get your grandads car on the go!

A Ford Capri might appeal to your retro desire. Fits nicely between Porsche 924 and Volvo 360.

Not really high maintenance - Mantas - and I have one GSI with bells n whistles - ahem, Moving house right now - no space for parking the Manta so needs to go comes with sat nav and tow bar - in the boot - needs fixing back on !

Agree with the whole bmw touring thing. My e30 touring was £1300 Its a 325, got lots of bells and whistles etc so a standard 318 or 320 would be much less. 325 is a bit juicy but its a great engine, very torquey. Also lots of space for bikes in the back!

Sierra 2 litre twin cam with Efi will go fast enough for you to have fun in, driven gently it will do 40mpg. Add to that the cheapness and the ease of adding toys from higher spec versions (LSD rear beam from a 4x4 is still relatively cheap as are the lower, stiffer springs and dampers)
You can fit everything from heated front screens to air con to cruise control over time and as mentioned they are light and easy to maintain and the estate cars are massive and have that lovely bubble shaped rear window.
You'l get way more car for your money than with a bimmer, plus a bit more (IMO) style.
Mk1's are more retro but come with the pinto which is not as fast or economical, it's not hard to swop the later twink in there though.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
