Given the price of fuel in the UK, I'm not too sure that if I was smoking a big six drinking through triple Webers that I'd want the fuel gauge right in front of my eyes! Under the passenger seat maybe? Nice to see the photos back though.

Believe it or not the Jaguar XK is about as good on fuel when equipped with well set up Webers as it is on the XJ6 S3 with fuel injection.

That is good to know Rich. Another job now done is the fuel level sender unit. This had to be ordered from Speedy Cables but they needed to know the spec of the particular fuel gauge - and I could only find the resistance value across the gauge when empty - so they supplied what might do the job..... I rigged up a circuit and found that the gauge read in reverse when I moved the float arm! Then I realised that the float arm resistor unit could be put on upside down and with a bit of fiddling it now gives the full gauge reading for the full movement of the float. After that I had to carefully drill and tap the 5 holes to mount the unit in the tank - making sure no bits went inside.

More jobs done as I have now plumbed in the vacuum pipes for the twin servos and a short tube to connect the heater pipes together - so the back of the engine has got a bit crowded! Another job has been to shorten the gearstick - it was catching on the bottom edge of the dashboard. I have cut off the bottom threaded section, then drilled and tapped up the gearstick.

Having sat in the car (And yes I went Brrrmmmmm Brrrrmmmmm!) I found that the dashboard layout was not easy to read so I have moved the other large gauge from the far left to the right of the steering column and moved the small fuel gauge to the bottom right hand corner. I think this looks a lot better and also has the advantage of getting the two indicator warning lamps back in the correct orientation as they are part of the rev counter and speedometer displays. The proper Walnut dashboard is still to be cut and so it will be to this layout.

I have been shopping at Europa Spares - what an Aladdins cave!! I also tried a Cobra windscreen on the Ronart - but it is too wide. Then I tried a Sprite windscreen - and that is too wide so the owner has said he will go with the aeroscreens for the time being.

Following the saga of the gearbox/bell housing/ starter motor, when I finally tried to spin it on the starter, there was a horrible noise from the ring gear and pinion. I checked that all was in the right place and tight, still the same, I put a bit of oil on the ring gear, still the same. I took the starter off and checked it and the tooth engagement pattern - nothing obviously wrong - checked that an auto starter is the same as a manual starter - reassembled and still the same noise so I wondered if it was due to the new ring gear and old pinion. Other people have also checked it and there has been no solution. I contacted the engine builder and showed him the starter and pictures of the bell housing and I now have 3 more Jaguar staters to try - all different and two different pinions teeth count..... On a brighter note the car has now moved to the paint shop - it towed very nicely!

Phil - Are you taking this through the IVA? That is the intention - although there are some aspects that need to be made "IVA compliant" it is a routine that the Ronart makers know well.

We now have the new steering wheel a That's better but these days I woodn't (pun intended give one of those houseroom. In a galaxy far far away in another aeon I was doing recoveries to assist the finances of building hot Minis. That also meant accident pickups . One I went to had the remains of a wooden wheel with a good portion of the driver's palms stuck to the jagged splinters. My BJ8 came with one but I was so unhappy with the potential that it got swapped out for a IMHO much safer leather rim wheel.

Yes Ian - I know about the concerns re wooden rims - on my cars I have leather too - but the owner wants that look...I did check the rim and it is in fact a riveted laminate and so less likely to splinter? Also I now have a quiet starter motor ring gear engagement! Of the four starter motors, one had 10 teeth on the pinion (all the others had 9) and hence very slightly narrower teeth at the root - so I put that on and it now all whirs round very nicely. It is an inertia type so I need to put a starter solenoid in the feed wire - touching terminals is not a long term solution!

I think you need to take a look in the mirror before posting the same picture again!
Is the heater original Jaguar? Looks quite compact.

Yep Mirrors and the heater is plumbed in. The heater is from Europa Spares. Yesterday was Goodie Time!

Exhaust is now fitted - which proved to be yet another saga but a good job has been done by Tube Engineering in Market Rasen. I have also done some work on the inside now that the seats have been leather trimmed (Thanks to Tony Baldassarre in Bedford)
