hey all, been away from the retro scene for a few years now. and after selling up my last project (couldn't commit the time or funds it needed) I have found my self in a more suitable position for a bit of retro motoring. so, I set out trawling the forums and the bay for a suitable retro motor with the following criteria. cheap (sub £1000 would be an added bonus) rwd (as lets face it fwd gets boring very quickly) simple to work on low insurance (a biggie) good parts donor from other marques or manufacturers. a bit of familiarity. so I looked at a few options and reuled many out: mk1/2 escort (stupid scene tax ridiculously expensive) another kp 30/60 (parts availability ruled this out) Volvo 340/360, this last one pretty much ticked all the boxes. so I headed over to the old forum of volvo300mania.com which I used to be an avid member, to see what was on offer. quickly stumbled upon an advert for a 1988 Volvo 360 glt (2ltr) saloon in silver? with a lot of cool extras such as foglights, sunroof, electric windows, central locking. most importantly 12months t+t so it was ready to drive away. it seemed a cool car for the money and a deal was struck. a week later I had this sitting on my drive: now progress might be a little slow on this one, as my landrover is taking up most of my free time. this is the third Volvo I have owned (a 360 hatch and a 340 hatch) so I'm pretty familiar with them. being as this is the 360, it has a b200 engine, which makes it an excellent choice for a b230ft turbo conversion should I feel inclined torque tube, over a prop also make it a bit stronger in the transmission department. I'm realy looking forward to getting my hands dirty again on this. although first job on the cards is to get the welding sorted. look forward to your comments, and as for a nice set of retro wheels (15" would be ideal to clear bigger brakes in the future) ill listen to all comments, as I just cant make my mind up. thanks all

on a forum where the main rule is "if you cant say anything good, say nothing" I can only come to the conclusion that a lack of even a single comment, means the masses must have deemed this s festering pile o'wibblepoo. so lets see if we can change that: my first weekend off of work for a while, and I could see no other way to spend it, other than playing with the Volvo. ill be honest, I have paid probably a bit to much on wheels and tyres, but I wont spoil the surprise just yet, as id rather show them fitted a trip to my local Volvo specialist (on the other side of the water so hardly local), to pick up all the lowering gubbins needed, a pair of 360 suspension legs, with what I'm told are 70mm springs fitted. a pair of rear lowering blocks and longer bolts. and while I was there I picked up some extra parts that I hadn't planned on such as: astra mk1 clear indicators, unfortunately not a matching pair, but fine by me. ill attempt to fit these later on. a full 2.5" twin silencer stainless system. unsure of origin although I have been told it was obtained from one of the various Volvo clubs? so todays antics were pretty much to get it sitting a bit lower. unfortunately the wheels I purchased require a few modifications to make them sit pretty. so these will have to be left for another day. good old Volvo steels will have to do for now so both front struts were dropped, and the new ones installed. one of the "new" struts had unfortunately fell prey to some rot around the spring cup, so it was hastily dismantled and another built up. for years I have struggled with breaker bars, and ratchets, even snapping spanners and bloddy knuckles, but no more! my neighbour gladly lent me this for the day, and it made removing rusty, solid and stubborn bolts an ease, albeit a cheapo ebay jobbie (£64) I would recommend for anyone with a keen interest in messing with old motors. I have just placed my order online for one while the lowering stick was being slapped all over the Volvo, my pal (who we shall call mr x, you may reconise from the kp thread if you have read it) applied this stuff to my fog lights: giving this appearance: *fosters* tre continental *fosters* very pleased with how it turned out, and would recommend it. The exhaust was next to be fitted up, and i must say that it was a very good fit, and i take my hat off to whoever designed and constructed this system (no clues whatsoever on it). as i was really expecting a battle to get it on. a nice non to loud although rather raspy exhaust note was released, much to the joy of all working on the car. a somewhat impulsive but worthy investment. still a lot to do and what follows are pics of the various rust areas on the car, I'm definitely going to have my work cut out here: now, having a bit of prior experience in welding and fabrication, I'm confident all the little rust patches can be rectified, a couple of scrap wings i have kicking around will aid the arch repairs, and the rest will have to be made from scratch. cheers for reading guys. comments allways appreciated.

Ok. I'll bite. 1. Nice car - they never came to North America so I find myself getting used to the shape. 2. Impressive plans - keep us posted. 3. Didn't realize IF you can't say something nice... Was the first rule, thought it was at least third or fourth.

thanks for all the positive comments guys. yes there is no paint plan for this, and a swift update will follow soon, mostly of the wheel variety.
ill agree with darrenh on that one, I two have read a lot off "another Volvo ect" that have quickly burnt them selves out.
afraid this ones a keeper, as I have a little bit of history with these, and quite possibly already passed the financial point of walking away.
as for a paint job, even though mrx is asking when I'm going to paint it, I love it just the way it is, old, ratty, but solid. and that's how I intend to keep it.
cheers guys, and its great to be an involved member of the community again.

Will look cool, I had a 340 3 door.
Personally I think splitting the heaslights and painting the bowls black makes a massive difference, and also a mk1 golf duckbill spoiler. These will dramatically improve the front end!
I'm liking the plans so far, look forward to seeing what happens to it.

cheers for all the comments guys. well ill be dropping a small update soon. ive gone for some uber bling retroish wheels, sort of want to provoke the "wtf......no, that's kool" sort of reaction. I hadmy tyres fitted yesterday, and the wheels look sweet, unfortunately the wrong offset, means that the hubs will need new studs, and atleast a 10mm soacer between wheel and hub. the Volvo offset is 34-38, and the wheels I have are et25, so a 10mm will see an offset of 35mm, unfortunately, the weedy Volvo studs (if I recall they are something like 40mm standard) will need to be replaced with longer items. luckily Subaru studs are the same thread and are available off the shelf in longer 63mm versions. ill update when I get the parts, and the modification has been carried out, but for now ill leave this here:

If the wheels have an offset of 25 and the Volvo's meant to be 34-38 then the wheels will sit 9-13mm further out, not in. Spacing a wheel doesn't increase its offset, it decreases it. It should look sweet, the wheels look like they'll really suit it. Have a play on www.willtheyfit.com to get your head around the offsets, just bare in mind that like I say, spacers reduce the offset rather than increase it. To be honest I'd just try bolting them on and see what they catch, then it'll be clear if spacing's needed.

thanks robinji I have bolted the wheels up, and they need a 10mm spacer behind. I'm aware of how offset works but you above post has confused me a little? I understand that offset is measured from the centre of the wheel, as if a line was drawn through the middle of the tyre. anything to the left (hub side) was positive offset (pushing out towards the arch) and anything the otherside of the line was negative offset? (pulling th ewheel into the arch? so an et of +25, would be 25mm added onto the hub face? am I wrong?

(pulling th ewheel into the arch? so an et of +25, would be 25mm added onto the hub face? am I wrong? Positive offset is how much the wheel is tucked into the car. So in your case the center of the wheel is normally tucked in 34-38mm further than the hub face. If you pull the wheel out by inserting a spacer, then the ET is reduced as the center of the wheel comes closer to the hub face. If your wheels have ET25, then with the 10mm spacer the ET will become 15. Anyway, cool car! The interior seems nice and the future wheels look awesome! Need a lot of nice pics with them on as soon as you get them on the car...
