hi folks, I'm 43 and got 3 accidents on record and 2 speeding fines. So needless to say my insurance has become very expensive. I know to try all the comparison sites for 1 car insurance but I'm wondering what is the best route for a second car.
main car - I'm looking to buy a mercedes s-class s320 cdi 2002 - me as only driver.
second car - something over 15 years old that's interesting to own but less than £1000 and will qualify for a classic policy. Gf likes old Celica's, anyway she will be the second driver, she has only been in this country 1 year but been driving for 20 years.
1) so whats the best way to go regarding insurance, is it worth going for a multi car policy and do these policies share your no claims bonus on the 2 cars and will it give me classic cover on the second car?
2) would i be better insuring these cars on separate policies, if so how do i compare classic policies, i was on moneysupermarket and when i went to compare the classic insurance it just looked like their normal quote screens, so are these sites geared towards classic policies?
any help or pointers greatly appreciated.

15 years old isn't considered classic by most insurers. I'd go as far as saying a 1998 car isn't really a classic by many peoples standards! Not saying that a 1998 car can't be cool or interesting though. You'll have more luck with something over 20 years old. Anyway, I'd go for a separate policy. The best insurer for your Merc will more than likely not be the best for your classic, and vice versa. You may find that a classic as a 2nd car will make things cheaper as you won't be using it as much in the eyes of the insurer. I've always had classics as my main, daily car so it makes thinks a bit more expensive with some insurers I've found.

Everytime I've tried multicar specialist insurance I've been able to find a cheaper deal insuring the cars separately. My present company will even use the no claims I've got across more then one car which I've had some of the larger firms refuse to do. I've also been able to reduce the price alot by phoning specialist companies as much as I hate doing it rather then relying on price comparison sites which have when I've read the fine print not actually offered the insurance cover I thought I would be getting.

If you are a middle aged housewife insuring a 3 year old clio, then comparison sites are great. As soon as you move outside of the "normal" they are hopeless. Convictions or driving history problems, older cars, modified cars.....you NEED to speak to a specialist that deal with your particular field.

Hi thanks for the reply, i read somewhere that 15 was the age a car had to be for classic insurance but i don't mind an older car, i enjoy working on cars. What insurers do you recommend i try a quote with?

multicar policies are usually only good for 'normal' modern cars, also, classic policies normally don't ask for any ncb, i've 3 classic policies on the go at the moment as well as 2 daily drivers, I have 2 sets of ncb which I use on the dailies, all my classic policies don't ask for ncb, neil nice one having 5 cars, i did not know some insurers don't asl for the ncb. What insurers do you recommend i try? Are your policies with different companies?

The cheapest i can get for the merc is £700 with 4 years ncb.

What insurers do you recommend I try a quote with? I managed to get my 1996 Golf GTI on a classic policy, but it was a struggle. I think it depends on the car with a lot of insurers. The general rule of thumb seems to be 20 years old = classic, unless it's a luxury marque or otherwise a little different from regular newer stuff (I think that's why they let my GTI on, even though it's a lardy Mk3!). Conversely, my 24 year old Nissan Patrol was extremely hard to get on a classic policy, due to it being a 4x4. I was told that this would be the case no matter how old it was! Insurers I would try: Peter James Adrian Flux Footman James There are lots more, but that's where I'd start. I'd also call them rather than use any online form thingy, as they seem to be able to give better quotes person-to-person. A bit laborious but worth it.

I would love a 944, a cheap one requiring tlc. Gf likes the celica.

Always ring the specialists if your a little out of the ordinary. As an example Lancaster quoted me £700 or so for my 1974 spitfire online but on the phone, I was able to explain my driving history and just talking to a human the price came down to £203
On my 1998 BMW 323 the price comparison sites were in the region of £4.5k but by phoning a broker direct and talking to a person I managed to insure the same car fully comp for £1.3k a year with One Insurance solutions.
I'm 23 and have very little no claims but this is only because I have been driving Classic cars and Motability cars all the time I have been driving, neither of which have gained me NCB. By explaining this and providing proof to insurers my quotes are drastically reduced and you just can't do that unless you speak to a person.

Same with the comments above about multicar policies not being any cheaper. The insurance industry refers to buyers of these policies as being led by convenience rather than price. Hit the phone, most of them have an alternate number listed on the SayNo0870 site if you're worried about sitting on the phone for ages on a mobile. do you know of any insurers that specialize in bad driving history and driving offences? The cheapest I can get for the merc is £700 with 4 years ncb. £700 for an S Class Benz isn't really that bad, is it? I'm £600 for a C320 CDI and I've got no points or accidents, seven years of no claims, protected no claims and all the other nonsense.

Footman James also class cars over 15 as 'classics' and their policies don't require any NCB. They only stipulate it's not got to be your only car and my policies are all limited miles.
For example: A couple of years ago I had a 1995 BMW 740i, fully comp, £240, 5k limited miles. Currently I've got a 1993 Merc 190e and Mk2 Golf GL on the same policy for £210 a year. I'm 31, got 3 points.

Its not the age of the car that makes it a classic,
My 1990 base model mk4 escort isnt a classic in the eyes of some insurance companies, yet an RS turbo of the same age would be!
I struggled to get my Maestro on a classic policy, but got it with a bit of phoning around, got 3 cars insured for just less than £1 per day!
