New addition to the Mitsubishi sanctuary today: She looks prepped for the oval of death but fear not folks, I've no plans to go banger racing. Beneath this tatty, weather-beaten, multi-coloured, cheesy exterior lies...an iron oxide crisis and the most gruesome interior I've ever sat in. My fragile enthusiasm is telling me it's not as bad as it looks. One could say the same about last nights Chinese though and we all know where the left overs end up. Once the rain cuts me a break I shall venture outside, find out what I've got and see if she'll splutter into life. While daunting, I feel this will be a better project to get stuck into than the blue Sapp for now. The important parts of the chassis are solid and a larger percentage of the restoration is within my skill set. This one is a 1979 Celeste 1600 ST. My crib sheets suggests it had a tyre squealing 73hp, top speed of 99mph and a RRP of £4,499. If it sees any of those figures again I'll be a happy man! The sales brochure quotes Stirling Moss - "This feels like a very good mile eater. It'll cruise on a motorway at 95 to 100". He must have been bouncing his off the limiter. Along with Sapporo spares, if anyone has leads on Celeste parts or even a donor vehicle/project, please get in touch. There are fewer Celeste's on the ground than Sapporo's so any help would be gratefully received. My plan is to get her back on the road and looking smart.

I take it you're already on the sigma-galant forum? www.sigma-galant.com/index.php - really helpful guys. Unfortunately mostly in Australia but enough of them to be worth asking. A few UK-ers too.

Poor thing. At least it gives plenty of opportunity for guilt free modification. You could replace the green flames with Dodge Firearrow graphics. MGB wheels on it?

Back down the storage yard today to investigate yesterdays arrival. Mixed findings really: Engine not looking healthy. In fact it looks seized and ugly... ...and that carb has had it Not all the wild life I found was dead. Going by the size of this fella, there was no shortage of food either. Eeek. Boot lid is terminal. Lucky horse shoe? The entire budget for repairs is kept here. Spares organised and boxed up. We have headlights, indicators and various bits of trim. This is good. Looking forward to my tunes playing out on this bad boy. Wings, front panel, grill, bumpers etc. Phew! Once upon a time this would have been a lovely place to sit. It was resprayed yellow 20 years ago. Originally it was grey. I can't get the engine to turn over, however I will try again before I condemn it for good. This would be a big stumbling block but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. For now that's where my efforts are going. Cosmetics, awful as they are inside and out, can wait! Yep I'm on the sigma galant forum Speedy

That yellow celeste brings back some memories. My family had a 79 jannil yellow one from new until 2000 when it was sold. It was the first car I ever drove on the road. And it had the cream seats with the orange cloth inserts with the brown carpets. The chief difference is ours was a GSR which had twin carbs and an ammeter where your coin box is not that ammeter ever worked. It suffered from overheating a lot in later years. One ebay tip is the Plymouth Arrow in the states is the same thing as a Celeste.

Hmm I can see why that's Oval fodder. Going to be a lot of work, engine is most probably fubar in that state but you never know. A full unused rebuild might be hiding underneath

An update on the hot rod. As feared water has trickled its way into the bores, sat there for a considerable time, corroded the pistons and done a fine job of fusing them together. With the throttle mechanism seized solid, carb beyond repair and alternator dead, this motor has had its day. My skills and budget won't stretch to a fabricated setup with different running gear etc. With the considerable parts list to boot, my best option is going to be waiting for another Celeste to turn up, perhaps a runner with a rotten shell, and building one from two. In the mean time I'll moth ball this one. Frustrating really as it's the right time of year to start work on a big project. Should anyone have any leads on a Celeste, you know where to find me

It's an Astron it makes it slightly easier to find a replacement. Might be worth checking ovalchat to see if someone has an engine lying around.

A 1982 Colt Galant 2000 estate has joined the Mitsubishi sanctuary... Whoops...shouldn't have opened the passenger door! By tomorrow it won't look this clean. Some more of the roof will have fallen off... Elvis came as standard on GLX models I believe! Under the seat was a millipede (released without harm), 1980's map, 3 blank cheques (ka-ching!), 28p, a pen, some sunglasses and a very old packet of Wrigleys. I snapped this up as it has a lovely low mileage 4G63 2l engine. My plan is to remove it along with the gearbox, brakes and wheels and fit them on the Celeste. I bought the Galant 'blind' so to speak and assumed it'd be fairly rotten and rough. Was quite surprised when it turned up (thank you James!) to find it's fairly solid underneath for 32 years old. That said there's no inner front wing and much of the roof looks like the contents of the dustpan. It's merely held in place by the vinyl. Its' swapped paint with most of Shrewsbury and all 4 corners have been bumped. And while we're at it, lets be honest - it's not a design classic. This is function over fantasy. No one right now is thinking "I really wish I could find an early 80's Galant estate". However EVERYTHING works, right down to the wipers on the headlights - and for that I will put it in for an MOT and see what it needs to be saved. There are only 3 Galant 2000's still registered and in 2007 this was the only one on the road (of Galant 2000's - other Galants in this shape were out there). This was also the last time it was used. I'm not holding my breath as the seatbelt mounting point is very close to the rot in the roof. Max budget £150. Watch this space! P.S - Speedy I put a post up on ovalchat last week. Cheers for the idea!

Man that would be terrible to break for spares unless its seriously rotten. It might very well be unique, I may be wrong but I don't think another galant/Siugma estae has been seen in captivity for a good few years. I might be able to help you out with a decent 2.0 Galant/Sigma engine if it will help the cause. I'll have to speak to the lad I promised it to - not sure if he wants it any more you see.

Awesome cars! That Galant estate is a beaut, never seen one before and I know a fair few people had a lot of interest when it showed up!
Do what you did with the Sapporo's with the Galant/Celeste, get the 'spares car' on the road instead! Its awesome!
(Glad to see you saving these!)

It may also be unique in being the first convertible Galant estate!
Tomorrow it's going over to the workshop and we'll see what it would take to patch up all the holes. I don't like breaking up cars and I'm aware most of her sisters are long gone. I figured if I didn't snap it up the banger lads would have got to it. At least this way I can put all the good bits to use on another poorly Mitsi should this be beyond repair. I need to remove the vinyl top and see how far the rot has spread. There's a lot of the roof held together with old glue and headlining.
It would be very handy to know a man with your welding skills. I'm going to turn up tomorrow and be met with groans rather than excitement!
If you have a source for a good 4G52 / 4G63 that would be brilliant. I may need a box too. The Celeste's is mated to a 4G32. It'll be the same pattern but whether the ratio's differ I'm not sure. But I definitely need an engine.

That Celeste looks beautiful and would be awesome, especially as it's literally around the corner from me. Good job!

Man that Galant brings back memories.
When I was young, we had a 1980 (or perhaps 82?) Mitsubishi Sigma wagon. We took that thing on bush tracks, saw Back to the Future and Milo & Otis at the drive in and all other sorts of memories. Even when it was 8 years old it had started to rot (In Australia, so no salt on the roads, just salt in the air from the beach) but by the time 1992 rolled around, it was leaking like a sieve and we had mushrooms and other fungi growing in the damp carpet... It got sent to the wreckers.

Ah yes, mushrooms and fungi. That brings back memories of yesterday cleaning them out!
I *think* I'm right in saying this Galant probably came from Australia. Mitsubishi shipped them from there to circumvent import quotas at the time.
I didn't know it'd been up for sale before. When James, the chap selling it, dropped it off he did say he'd had it since then and had been unsure what to do/what to ask. He'd been asked to pick it up from a house clearance and scrap it. The wise man didn't do that fortunately.
Right - time to go and investigate that rot.

My first car was a Sapporo - NKL663W. No idea if it's still in existence. That was back in 1989. Wish i knew some of the things i know now back then....like don't px it against a Metro Turbo lol.
Liking your attempt to rescue every old Mitsi!

That Galant estate would be an ideal donor for stuffing some VR-4 running gear into... that'd be an awesome sleeper - retro 80's looks with some decent performance.
Oh darn, I'm talking myself into the idea of a project....
