also, re: the chrome tip, i know they had one as standard, this just wasnt the standard one, i don't have a pic but it looked a bit like a semi big-bore halfords job had been bolted on, it stuck out far and cheapened the look of the rear, i think even where the tip has gone black on the mild steel exhaust it looks a lot cleaner and OEM than before.
I do need new rear lights as one is cracked in multiple places, its just a case of waiting to see if they come up at a good price, i'll run them in chrome first then decide if i want to shadowline them, i just think the chrome looks great on silver/bronze/blue cars, it just never sat well against the red, but it might look better now the paint is less oxidised and orange looking

Right, more progress has been taking place yesterday, I am now in possession of a mint looking ( and smelling!) dark grey cloth interior, front and rear seats.
I also now have a new black dashboard, trim pieces for gearstick surround and handbrake etc..
( when i post pics of the ruined beige interior you will understand why this makes me so happy!)
I'm going to aim to fit this tomorrow weather permitting, and will chuck up some progress shots when its done for comparison.
I'm going to deep clean the beige carpet and if it looks rubbish with the dark seats i will dye it as its unworn just dirty.
The door cards are solid but again deeply stained so to tie them in with the grey interior i intend to dye the plastic handles and pockets and to retrim the cards in black and white tartan

so, this was this weekends bit of work : we started off with one slightly worn out beige cloth interior beige and brown dashboard and 4 spoke wheel all of which was stained with tar and cigarette ash so was due to be replaced, began by stripping out the rear bench, only to find a few undiscovered gifts under the bench.. (pair of PA system/rack amp crossovers lol) the missus cleaning and hoovering under the seats, notice the stained carpet which will be dyed darker if it doesnt vax up well another present, 1/4" drive 13mm Snap On socket, nice seats gone getting there, nothing broken yet! the point of no return... black dash top in, if i ever have to plumb the heating pipes into one of these again it will be 50 million years to soon! centre console and m-tech wheel on, and everything is still fully functioning! non-skanky seats in ( mixed colour trim will be dyed later on) shifter surround is missing in this pic next mission is to dye the door cards and retrim them in a pure 80s style black and white tartan material, gonna look good!

Good stuff. Some good retro finds under the seats. They could finance future work to the 520, lol.

I'm keeping the free Snap On socket, but i binned the old poker chips, and the old fake fingernail my girlf found under the seat and helpfully threw in my face ergh haha

I think the beige carpet makes a nice contrast, everything vaxed up will be great, get some black floormats in there and its win

You're making good progress. I'm amazed by how simple the wiring is behind the dash!

door cards trimmed just need to paint the handles and pockets and door caps then put the whole lot back together, its an aquired taste perhaps, but looks a lot cleaner and neater

Oh my gosh Tim, it looks so different already!! And good job on the finds under the seats... I see you found some more poker chips ... When I picked it up originally I kept finding them littered around the car! Really looking amazing ... New seats look really good!! Will continue to watch the progress Soph

this is all I have to say today : and period enough that they inform me they are made in W. Germany so predate that fall of the wall in what, 1992? my hand is not tiny, they really do have that dish 16x8 et 16, i know they tyres are a bit tall profile, but once i get round to fitting and lowering they will be changed for more 'stance friendly' profile

Right, wonder if anyone with an e28 could help me with this, i'm looking at engine swaps, i'd rather have an s50b32 e36 M3 engine, but to purchase one with a gearbox and a known history is circa £2000.
So i've been looking at alternative more modern powerplants, something M50 based, perhaps an e36 328i engine or a 325i engine, around 190ish BHP.
What I want to know, is, would this make a nice drivable car? or would i be wishing for more power ( bear in mind i have just got rid of an e46 M3 and have a daily Focus RS)
thanks

progress has been slow lately due to the weather, and mainly because i have been waiting on this little lot : (ignore the service parts for the RS which are piled up in the same temporary storage place) Full front control arm replacement kit, upper and lower, tie rods and droplinks, steering idler arm and rear pittman arms

Little update today, got round to refitting the stereo and fixing the front speakers, and fixing the electric windows, have also been experimenting with dying the carpet into a dark grey. So not a lot, but a few pics to look at
