As my current Volvo 480 Turbo is not long for this world, I have been saving for a new car. I had made my mind up that I wanted a Sierra DOHC, but since then I had to lend my better half most of my car fund to help pay some of her uni debts. Thankfully she will soon be starting work and be in a position to pay me back (horray)! Problem is now I have started to have doubts about the sierra (I am totally fickle!) and have seen quite a few good E30's for sale. I have always fancied the shape and stance of them (once lowered). Previously I could never have seen myself driving a BMW, but now I am less of a car snob, thanks largely to retro-rides. VS. If anyone has any other suggetions to tempt me, my criteria for my new purchase are...... RWD Manual 2.0 (approx) easy to insure around £600-800 (for a ok example)

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

how about an XR4i on classic insurance if you can find a nice one? Had one before the insurance was cheap as chips IMO, but I just couldn't live with the fuel economy!

Would take some finding, but what about a mk2 Carlton?? Cheap, cheap bits, 2-litre is cheap to run if not that quick plus serious poke if you go for a 2.6 or 3-litre. Always fancied me one dropped on black wide steelies and a NASCAR paintjob.....

Ive had loads of E30s and the 320i is by far the worst for fuel economy! the 325i is a little better!!!!! but the best would be the 318is 16v, its far quicker than the 320i and will manage mid-30s mpg (no 6cyl noise though!)

Thought about them but I think it would just be too big and heavy. I guess it would be similar performance to a 2.0 Granada, which I discountered for being too slow. Both the 320i and injection twink Sierra crack 0-60 in about 9 seconds and tramp on to about 120 mph. Does the Carlton come close to that kinda performance? Ive had loads of E30s and the 320i is by far the worst for fuel economy! the 325i is a little better!!!!! but the best would be the 318is 16v, its far quicker than the 320i and will manage mid-30s mpg (no 6cyl noise though!) Thanks for the info. As for the 318is rarity has kept there value higher than the 6cyl cars, I think a decent one would be out of my price range!

Think the 2-litre Carlton suffers through only having the 115bhp 8-valve as fitted to the Cav/Frontera....having said that the 8v Cav I had would pull more than 120 (almost 130 indicated, but that's trusting the speedo to be accurate...) and it was just the cooking LS, not the SRi.
Biggest problem with those is that they were never really loved, and you'd be hard pushed to find one that hasn't been minicabbed, caravanned or thrashed to death now.

The Sierra would be better on juice i reckon, picked BMW, cos A: got plenty votes in my poll, B: I've not had one and would if i was in teh market for one. Either way you are onto a winner with both ya choices, why not just see what comes up at the right price? I'd want to count up as much dosh as possible and opt for a 318is if i didnt need a hatchback.

You can't beat a BMW E34 520i for value for money at the mo. 700 will get you a near mint late 80's model

suffolkpaul: Mmmmm! Alfa 75 forgot about that one! 2.0 Twin Spark is pretty quick too. Thanks! schakal: I thought Renault 21 turbo's were Fwd or 4wd. RWD is the most important criteria! bobz: e34 is a bit big for me I think, it would have to be a 535 to tempt me! Plus if I was going for a 5-series it would have to be an e28 shape one. briandamaged: does look like a good buy................ but its a boat! Plus I keep having bad thoughts about S12 Silvia's, problem is there all BLOODY AUTOS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Horses for courses - depends what you want to do with it!
I voted Sierra, naturally. I've done thousands of miles in E30s though and they're perfectly good cars. A 320 WILL be dearer to run. A DOHC Sierra MAY have a self destructing cylinder head.
Flip a coin....

I've got to agree with the Alfa 75 idea. RWD de dion trans axle, inboard rear brakes with a diffuser to cool them, amazing front suspension. The 75 really is a race car for the road with 4 doors, nothing else of the era comes close! Plus when was the last time you saw one? they get used at the ring a lot too, and trust me even in standard 2litre twin spark trim they are bloody quick way faster than an E30 325, then if you get the 3litre v6 very little will keep up with you on a real road.
