For some time, I've had a hankering for an Escort, one of the very last Mk6s (for reasons I can't adequately explain). I know the last few were five-door Finesse models, sold in 2000, so X-reg. But how do I know how near to the end of production a car was made? Does anyone know what the chassis number of the very last one was? These are RR fodder right? I mean, they're Escorts for a start, and they are no later than 2000...
I'll add a pic of a nice one later, my work PC doesn't like me searching for pictures of Escorts ;D

Here are some nice ones. The Escort is on a whole 'nother level over there. Here in the States, no one is nostalgic for Escorts, and very few were ever modified. A very appliance-like car, point A to B and thats it, with the exception of of the Escort GT, perhaps.

A couple of years back we found ourselves in the position for the first time in our lives to be able to buy a new car for cash (inheritance). One of the very last Escorts appealed to me but at the time it seems other people thought the same and prices were a lot higher than I expected making a new basic Fiesta not a massive amount more. In the end we opted for the current Fabia & Smart as a couple years old secondhand was less than new Fiesta ! Anyway getting back to the topic we can see how Mk, MKII, early MKIII are now treated by everybody from youngsters to elderly who want a classic and all sorts of motorsports enthusiats. I don't think that will ever go away and just like I look at 80 years old Austin Sevens and drool over them people will be doing the same over all models of Escort even 80 year on when other cars of their eras have been forgotten. The only thing I'd say is if you hunt out one of the last / best then try to keep original and no permanent modifications. Change the wheels but keep the originals safe in the back of the garage. Same applies to lowered springs, uprated shocks, booming stereo, body kits and such. They might seem like the dogs damglies crusing around Mc Donalds but as soon as you "personalise" a car then you limit it's appeal to just your own taste and that can have the effect of reducing value if you ever decide to sell unless you can find a buyer with exactly the same taste as yourself.

Thanks for the input, and here's a pic of one I rather like the look of: The plan would be to keep it stock, or minor mods such as wheels and lows (as Paul H suggested). Body kits and megawatt stereos are not for me! It'd be one I want to keep (and hope it appreciates!) I know vans went on longer, but I do need a five-door for the practicality, as some less mobile relatives often need ferrying about. The 52 plate one does intrigue me though...

Deffo the best built of the later escorts, well appointed and easy to upgrade I have an R 1.6LX reg as a disabled transport for relatives, it is slow but fairly good on juice, i have to really try to get mine below 30 round town but get 40+ on a run (very high geared for an asmatic 1.6), vans ran later (02ish) the car was 98 ish but as with all production runs there are later reg'd cars, seen a 51 plate local

they arent bad cars at all,we bought a 1996 mk6 one. (was the 1.6 16v cabaret model so had an almost flippy green/brown paint) cost us £150 with 8 months MOT, 68000 miles and only needed a wheel bearing. had it for several months as a stop gap and I actually liked it a lot more than I thought I would. surprisingly reliable as well, considering people always joke about the Fixed Or Repaired Daily thing it never went wrong in the time we had it.
latest one Ive seen was a friend's X reg estate, not seen later than that.

I've had 3 hated them all MK7 TD being the worst offender, also was given a MK5 1.4 LX and bought a MK4 XR3i Convertible.
They excelled in no area, every thing was very average, its a great car but really lacked any kind of soul for me, my mate summed them up well as a jack of all trades master of non, it was what the general public would call a great a to b car.
I couldn't fault it thou as it really did what a car needed, just lacked that feel for me.

I had a '00 Escort Finesse - It was a more than decent car. In many ways I always preferred it to the early Focus.......

i have had two mk6 1600 zetec's and a mk5 facelift 1600 zetec and all were briliantly reliable the mk5 cost me 50 quid and did several 400 mile round trips without fault, but yeah not even the gti model is a quick car, and they are basic, would love a mk6 4x4 rs one day

i have found recently that any escort seen on the road has started to stand out as a rare sight, only today i saw a red mkVI with a mondeo like rear bumper held together with silver/white tape, that made me want to jump out of my car and snap away (but due to traffic i didnt) now this is only my views on it, but i cant see any of the mk's after the IV becoming anywhere near as sought after, as a few recent photo captures will help to show. 1995 FORD ESCORT mkVI 1.4 L by shagracer, on Flickr 1991 FORD ESCORT LX mkV by shagracer, on Flickr

I do love a 'Scort, it's a childhood thing. Born in '71, as a kid I rode around in mk 1's, first car I bought was a '77 mk II 1.3GL 4 door, I had a 1980 mk 3 1.6 Ghia in crystal green with the groovy factory decals and a slammed 1.6 Ghia (yep, factory carb fed, quite rare) silver Orion with RS 7 spokes all in the late 80's / early 90's. To my generation they definitely have a soul, everyone can tell a tale from their youth that involves an Escort. Not that long ago missus had a diesel Scort and commuted 40 miles a day in it no probs. When her commute dropped to 10 miles I persuaded her to sell it and buy a W124 Merc instead. The bloke I sold it to was well chuffed with it and he paid £200 more than I would have taken if he'd bothered to haggle. I almost felt bad... almost.
Numbers are really dwindling now though, they're fast becoming a rarity. I always fancied a factory kitted GTi estate.

Oh and for the record, that Max Power pink car is hideous. Wrong on so many levels.
Should be wearing Ford tiger stripes.

I adore a Mk3/4 Escort, but the Mk5/6 has always left me cold. Their styling and design just seemed such a huge departure from what made 80s Ford so good to me... and the lack of straight lines hurts! Still, they can look pretty decent. Just a shame they've got such a huge past to live up to...
