Ok - front wings are off and a start made on straighting up the the offside inner wing Although it looks structural - the diagonal brace is simply a air tube - fresh air is force fed from a cowl on the inner face of the panel (bottom of the cars grille) - the air travels up the tube and exits via a small controllable flap on the inner bulkhead - sort of an early air conditioning - the air tube joins the lower inner wing - its been the subject of several bodges - and rot loves the area where the four skins of metal come together at this point Air tube removed and the rot revealed Templated And cut back to sound metal New panel fabricated and ready for welding in Welded (mig) cleaned up and bumper iron reinforcement panel made up - this will be spot welded on as was the factory original Welded up & bumper iron trialed for fit

Next was to sort the upper suspension mounting on the inner wing - this had suffered from accident damage at some stage in its life and rather than straighten the inner wing up (agreed slightly awkward with the engine insitu) they carried out a bodge instead So with a bent inner wing and a road wheel scrubbing tyres - they packed the suspension mounting off the panel with home made shims to correct the wheel alignment Once I had the inner wing straightened up I repaired the split to the bulkhead cross member Then just some dressing up of the panel with a flat dolly and hammer Trial fitting of suspension mountings just make sure I have everything back in the right place & flush

This is the inner mounting for the steering box which has lost a section - it looks like it has suffered some impact has the inner wing through which the bolt travels has been damaged Both the bracket & inner wing were repaired and reinforced - the pedal box bracket was also re welded to the chassis where it had cracked Attention was turned to the air tube Which was frankly past its sell by date Using the old one as a template I made up new sections then welded them together managing to re use the bulkhead return end off the old tube The inside of the tube along with the back face of the closing panel were sprayed with zinc primer prior to being spot welded together Once the tube was complete a few adjustments were made to gain a neat trail fit Air tube fully welded into place and welds dressed Final repair tacked into the offside inner wing Welded & cleaned up Some final dressing of rippled areas with a hammer and block and that's one side of the inner wings sorted with the structural repairs

So well out of it for a few years the car very much still exists but life has very much got in the way - house move 60 miles west - gave up the salaried career - ran a franchised business for 18 months and gave that up in September - started a new business which I run from home in October - quite a lot of work done on the bodyshell which has since been away and dipped - some minor welding to complete and I can crack on with getting it ready for paint - it's due at a major show at the end of March 2017 has a painted bodyshell - apologies life has just got in the way me charting the progress on the forum but if you don't mind me picking up from where I am now with it - images to follow in the next few days - promise !

Front & rear brackets were fabricated for the chassis tilter so that we could get the car off the ground and see what we let ouselves in for I realise this is weird thread hijack on a bloody extensive chassis build but....by any chance could you tell us the make & model of that chassis tilter please? I've never seen one like it before and when I get my own shed it is something I would like to make myself -- and that design looks very stable

Not at all - It a NBN marketed by CJ Autos - link - www.cjautos.eu/NBN_CHASSIS_TILTER_HEAVY_DUTY_p/ct05.htm - it's currently at my mates but it will be coming to my workshop in mid / late Jan - you are welcome to come and measure it up / take as many pics as you wish - it's certainly something that could be readily fabbed up - personally I would not be without it

On with nearside then - found a supplier of door hinge pin & bearing sets (turns out series 1 Land Rover with an additional brass bearing is identical) So I will continue to slog on with profiling and should be close to getting the shell into a polyester spraying filler towards the end of next week

Bookmarked.
My Grandfather had one of these and rumour had it he drove it to Grange-over-Sands from Cape Town when he moved back to the UK. Don't know how true it is, but it was a family story.
I just remember it left the garage twice a year. Once for a service and once for a run around the Lake District. Why only one run? No idea.
I do know that when he decided to sell it, I tried to buy but he refused. He always was an curse word!

That sounds like a true Javelin owner to me George - Good friends of mine did the 10,000 mile round trip from California to Alaska & back last year - just to prove it could be done in a virtually original 65 year old 1500cc saloon

This is my Late Farthers Javelin with the cars designer The car was sold in the 80's The designer was chap by the name of Gerald Palmer who went on to design several other fine cars like the MG Y type & MG Magnette, Riley Pathfinder, Wolseley 4/44 & Wolseley 6/90 - The registration number on your late fathers Javelin rings a bell - I am pretty sure that it is still about in The Jowett Car Club

Bookmarked. Fascinating back story on the car, and great to see the resto continues. One thing with the shell dipping though, hasn't it been more or less proven that once dipped, it's impossible to get rid of every trace of the acid, and the shell will then rot in strange places as a result?
