Some very interesting reading on this post !!!
I own a car security / electrical / diagnostic company and deal with issues you have mentioned all day long, i can supply and fit all of the main alarms mentioned and even get a pro to do it for you in your local area..
However i'd like to clear up a few points with regards to mainly the Clifford alarms.
The early G3 & G4 systems were, like any alarm, fine if correctly fitted by a professional who had been on the correct training courses, however as like many trades there were a few guys out there that just didnt do them properly and gave them a bad name.
I've had a Clifford Concept 650 on my Vw t4 now for 7 years that i fitted along with central locking and electric windows and have not had 1 fault with it and still use the original key fob !!! I mainly feel this is because 1 it was fitted correctly but also because i know how to use it properly. These systems are very far advanced and are not like your normal cheap systems that you buy from maplins for £100, so from my experiance id still fit a Clifford to my own vehicle but make sure it's a Later model as the earlier ones did suffer interanl relay problems after some years usage, don't even both removing to try to refit to another vehicle unless you buy a new uncut loom............ in my experiance this is where loads go wrong then have silly faults and problems.
Toad Ai606 excellent alarm and now can come with the tracker built in for a little extra.
Cobra or Autowatch both excellent cheaper units both have proved to be ultra relaible in my 10 years of fitting.
Hidden switches are great Diy solutions but make sure you use relays if cutting a main power feed otherwise you will burn the switch out.
I also have a few tracker solutions ranging from a portable pay as you go unit to a proper 24hr insurance approved system which id be happy to tell people about if they wanted and admin will allow it.
I was pointed to this post by one of my customers who i know from a classic ford forum where i did a tracker deal for members, he has one of my units and I'm guessing he's happy as he took the time to contact me with the thread as he knew i was a member on here.
I'll happily answer any security issue the best i can if posted on here without giving too much away.
Thanks
Colin
