My understanding is that the reputation was undeserved. I believe that someone like Fast Bikes reviewed it afterwards, with that especially in mind & reckoned that although the bike wasn't entirely innocent, the problem was more to do with inexperienced riders, esp born again bikers. Dad was looking into getting one just after it was branded unsafe, as there were good deals to be had!
tyres had a great deal to do with it as well.
Having riden one,the first thing I noticed was the slip sliding the wibblepoo standard rubber was doing
Sorry to go off topic, it was Simon Hargreaves and the guys at Performance Bikes who branded it unsafe from the first ride at launch... Huge tank slappers and they then had one as a long termer, tweaking and tuning it, especially with a steering damper added. Simon ended up testifying at a court case brought against the manufacturer by a widow of an owner as to it's bad design. I only know all this because it went on whilst they were in the same office as us and Simon then became the editor of Revs when I worked there... It fascinated me at the time that a manufacturer could get something so wrong. Then try to cover it up with a recall to add a damper, after denying it needed one at an earlier stage.
Back on topic - Which means we get a plentiful supply of cheap engines! Not being a particularly bike orientated person, are there certain engine types that give characteristics more suitable for a car than others? Dynamics? Torque etc? ;D
