What brand of coil do you have? On the Stag it started to spit out of the exhaust when it was warm at 3kRPM, sometimes at 2.5kRPM. If you were gentle with the accelerator it was fine. It turned out to be the new coil I have fitted (a County branded item, although I hear Intermotor are not that much better). I guess there is a reason why Bosch coils are pricey (what mine is running now). However, it seems strange that all of these issues started after fitting the carb. Is it jetted correctly? This is something a rolling road could sort out for you. Unlikely, but what state is the distributor in? I can't remember what brand the coil is off hand......but I seem to remember it was a decent one, may even be Bosch. Reason being my mate ordered and fitted it so I didn't take a lot of notice. At the moment the hesitation is far less pronounced than it was since we fitted the new dizzy that arrived from Germany last wk, magnecor leads, plugs etc. It's never really 'missed', I get a constant tone from the engine and exhaust so she seems to be firing on all cylinder permanently but some are weaker than others, it's not rhythmical either really. As previously mentioned, the compression and cam profile have been checked and all is well. So she's being starved of something.... Basically the common denominator if I back track through the work done is always the 38 dgas. But speaking to webcon, giving them the coding of the item I received, they assure me that this is THE unit that they prescribe for the 2.3 cologne, jetted down sufficiently over say a 2.8 cologne or 3.0 Essex application. So I think this wk needs to concentrate on the whole carb, it's health (although it's only about 300m old) it's functionality, and failing these, it's ability to work in harmony with this particular engine. I've seen people running a 32/36 instead over a 38, but there is never a definitive reason given bar fuel economy. ??! Cheers chasr

what were the symptoms that made you change the solex to the weber? I don't know about these engines, does the weber use the same manifold? are the gaskets compatible, are any /all holes needed in the gasket present? sometimes the carbs breathe internally through holes in the manifold gasket. are any vacuum or breather hoses blanked off with bolts or in the wrong place? is the fuel pump ok for this type of carb? is the coil the right type, if you've fitted a ballast type 9v coil it could be breaking down under the 12v load. or vice versa. is the choke operating correctly? lots of questions sorry No no daddy, questions are good! I'm compiling them to work through on wed so keep them coming.....whether I know the answer though is a different matter though with my 'basic' mechanical understandings! ;D -The weber came with the correct adaptor plate and relevant gaskets to fit the original manifold. I wasn't present when it was fitted but I have every faith in the person who did it, he is a full time engineer and high end classic car restorer so..... -Breather pipes from both rocker covers are venting freely through filters. The vacuum advance has been tried attached and currently blanked. Blanking it seemed to improve the initial hesitation on take off but not cure it so I think it's simply masking the root cause of the issue. Any other pipe work.....I can't answer but I know my mate has played with every single one in the quest to sort this! -Fuel pump is a red top facet and filter king regulator so shouldn't have any issues there, it is capable of far far more than this engine will ever require! But next step in this area is going to be checking the tank and feed for debris etc that may be getting unsettled when I'm on the move. -Coil type, I can only guess is correct but it's something I'll check again...... -With a decent pump of the throttle she fires up fine and the revs settle after she warms up. I'm guessing that's the extent of the choke working correctly? Cheers

Ps. The reason I junked the solex is because it wouldn't start from hot anymore and the throttle operation was grinding and clicking and causing sudden throttle to the extent that pulling away in first was very hard, usually causing her to stall and then a pain to restart! Parts weren't available to repair this extent of wear so.......

Spitting back through the carb and hesitation is normally leaness. Fuel pump ok? Fuel filter clear? Carb filter (under the brass nut near the inlet hosetail) clear? Leaness is also my (uneducated) guess Kieran! She feels starved. The filter king is the large glass type and there is no debris in there. But I know the carb filter hasn't been checked so that'll be high on the list of priorities! Thank's for highlighting that! There has been so much new pipe work between the filter and carb that I guess it's totally feesable that some curse word from cuts etc could have gone through Thank's again

Well, we checked everything on wed and twas all ok, but still the running issue persisted! So a very cold morning was spent today on the rollers. Turns out it was all the carb all along. The weber that was supposedly correctly jetted and set up for my engine.........WASN'T. Think the jet size was increased 3 times in the end to where it was just right, then the airflow metering thingy was allowing was too much so has been reduced. End result after 2hrs and 5 runs: no hesitation at any point going up through the revs and smooth as silk when cruising! 91bhp too which I was very pleased with, especially considering she was only 107'ish 43yrs ago off the production line! RESULT!! ;D She is of course not perfect, and during this whole process the rings have worn that last little bit and she now burns a bit of oil and is spitting some out of the dipstick. Another issue is the thermostat is shot and engine is no where near hot enough so that'll be ordered. I'll keep her topped up and run like that for now. But when I can save enough I'll have engine rebuilt and add some 'fruity' upgrades! Other option is a bigger lump like a 2.8 but I really would like to keep the original engine if poss. Got a wedding to pay for first though! ;D Cheers for all your advice though guys, in one way or another, most of you were right! Attachments:
