Hi, ive gone down to my mk1 escort to discover some light fingered low life has tried to nick the car. Thankfully i installed a hidden switch so they couldnt start it but they did manage to rip out some of the wires. Can anyone help me to sort the mess of wires out, ive managed to get most of it back but I'm unsure which wires go where on the ignition switch. I have 4 wires 1x heavy black 1x heavy black with a yellow trace 1x heavy red and 1x thinner yellow. on my ignition barrel i have 7 connections but 3 of them are paired up there are some markings on the barrel which are...ST....IGN...BAT...ACC. Can anyone tell me what wire goes where. As a foot note if anyone knows anything of this attempted theft id love to be able to repay the job they done to my car. The car was in Bexhill near Hastings and its a red mk1 escort estate

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Have you got any sort of visible theft protection on it? The hidden switch is a great last line of defence, and has been worth it's weight in gold here, but maybe it would've been left alone with even a metal steering wheel lock?
One of my bikes was nicked recently and the other one was manhandled onto the road a couple of times before being abandoned. Since then, I've been using a couple of highly visible chains and disclocks and haven't had any hassles.
I know some steering wheel locks aren't brill and can be easy to defeat but this sounds like an opportunist rather than a targetted attempt to blag what is a desirable car. If they really wanted it, they'd have it on a truck.

Detachable steering wheel that is kept in the house or securely padlocked in the boot is a good deterrant.

If someone wants it, they'll have it, chain round a tree is the best suggestion so far

If someone wants it, they'll have it, chain round a tree is the best suggestion so far After seeing how fast a friend cut the HD, branded, Thatcham approved and expensive motorbike chain with angle grinder (thieves used cordless or Stihl saws) when he lost the key to the lock I don't have as much confidence in chains any more. Locally a chap put his motorbike in the garage chained it to the floor, parked his wifes and then his car infront of the door before going on holiday. He came back to find theives had removed the back sections of his garage along with a neighbour fence panel and stole that way. As said - if they want it they will get it no matter what you do. Mine lets them go just far enough to get into a heavy cctv zone. So they're seen abandoning my car when it 'breaks down'.
It also has a violent defence system that would seriously hurt them, and scar them for life (if not kill them), but it's rarely set. That's only for occasions when it's gonna be particularly vulnerable, and setting it puts a warning up. Seems harsh just for attempted theft, but they won't do it again.

Sorry to hear what happened mate, Just had a hunt on ebay for the quick release steering hub yoke, only 30 odd quid. Desperately cheap to stop some scrote nabbing a car. mikeymk - care to divuldge the violent defence system? maybe its fills the car with halon gas and disables the window winders

It depends on who the thief is. If he's just your run-of-the-mill Chav/scrote, they'll see a snap-off wheel and not bother. If it's a professional thief, they'll take it and if they've got the kit, trackers etc will make no difference. I've been using a disklok over the last 7 years. I've had 2 break-ins where they've rifled through the car, that's it.

Don't rely on a tracker to get your car back, parking it in a container will make the tracker almost useless.

Lol Gotta admit, wouldn't want one of these throwing a few pieces of shattered trim in my face, but then i don't go breaking into other peoples cars.. Yeah, the likes of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners can make a severe contribution to an otherwise basic security system, even if accidentally. One needs to be careful when retrofitting such devices, and doing it wrong. I'd go out and check for any mistakes, in case something like the immobiliser set them off, and they aren't fitted properly, i always like a beer whilst i work, can get a bit clumsy.. But then i'd rather that than they speed off on an adrenaline buzz, in a car with 200bhp-per-ton and tiny brakes, end up hurting someone else instead.
