WTF has happened to all the Vennies?

Recently brought a MK 4 Cortina with a BOB 2.9 Scorpio engine fitted, with a BOA loom.
Trouble I have right now, is that when I start her up, it races at 2500 revs for 5 or so secs, then settles, then it wavers and usually cuts out when I engage gear, it has a t9 gearbox been told I need a vss fitting to the box, as the ecu on the engine thinks its a auto, before i go out and get the bits could do with a bit o confirmation, or any help really, I'm a bit kerfuffled with modern engines and all their sensors!!

Many thanks for that, actually found the guy who put the engine in, he has confirmed he didnt get round to doing the vss, and he sold it to the guy I brought it off with the stalling issue, seem odd the guy I brought it off didnt sort it out?? Any how, Ive now ordered parts from Burton power, will post up results!!

My MK5 Tina has the BOA fitted with no VSS. The BOA doesn't need it to work. The engine is onlr racing because it is getting the air to race. Air can't travel down wires. Check all air inlet hoses. Try unplugging the ISCV. If that doesn't work try removing it and blanking the holes off. If that does then try cleaning the ISCV or get another, I'm pretty sure from memory they're a common part with other engines.

Thanks for the link, huge amounts of very useful stuff you have produced there, I'm a bit fresh faced on all this, so everything is useful right now. I am on a vertical learning curve, amazing stuff!! this time two weeks ago I didnt even know Cortinas could have a 2.9 24 valve engine in em!! LOL !! I'm a carb man, but I'm learning, and its great, love it!!

That section of the site is a bit behind, thes more details to go on yet regarding the elctrics. I just haven't had the time to sit in front of the computer and do it. I'm also concentrating more on the Escort side at the moment with the Zetec swap section.
As for your car, with you saying it's a BOB engine, I assume it is using the BOB inlet system? I'm not familiar with the BOB system but maybe the original builder removed something when converting to BOA management and has inadvertent left an opening somewhere in the manifold? Could even be a screw hole somehwere left open.

Update!!
First I thought I'd try and fit the VSS sensor to the gearbox and connect to the ecu loom.
I now know the VSS plug which should be there to plug the sensor in, has been chopped!
So I'm going to have to go the the motor factors tomorrow and try and find a female to plug into the wire from the gearbox and try and work out how to wire in a extended loom which I'm going to make, into the ecu. although I think I can splice the live into plug 37 - (splice live port) plug 20 (ground) and 3 (vss) For some perverse reason I'm loving the challenge, If theres any mistake you guys can see in what I'm going to attempt to do, please let me know!!

Couldnt find a female plug, so going to chop the plug, and do some splicing, got the connectors, 5 amp wire, and some shielding, my buddy is going to ''do the do'' wednesday, hopefully it will be goodly !

as mentioned earler, the BOA ecu and loom doen't need the VSS to work correctly - I've done several of these  In general, it does sounds like an air leak, although there are few other things that can cause similar symptoms. (failing MAF, faulty lambda sensors, low fuel pressure/bad regulator for starters) How did you look for leaks? Have you tried spraying carb cleaner around the pipes and joins/. If the engine picks up when you spray an area, there is your leak... |

Ah good idea, my buddy is fitting the sensor today, if no joy, I'll go the carb cleaner way thanks, I'm on a vertical learning curve here. I did it the Fred flintstone way, just by gripping the hoses at the joints. I know, I'm fresh at all this techie stuff! Just cant work out why it stalls when I depress the clutch. Thats why I'm heading for the VSS, the high revs on start up, not sure if its connected, will post later today if its sorted or not. Many thanks for all the great info, be lost without it

Hi guys, going to start a 24v conversion into a mk2 granada 2.8i with manual box. the scorpio is a 93 with auto box, will I need this vss conversion kit? As I'm hoping to keep the manual box from the 82 ghia x.

VSS fitted, doesnt stall now!! Just got to sort out the high revving at start up, will do the carb cleaner trick
