Have found a number of problems....release bearing jammed in position, spigot bearing disintegrated but clutch itself is OK. There is a problem inside the SIMCA box though...something has broken. Time to dig another one from under the bench and fit the necessary honda adapting bits. Meanwhile I'll have chance to turn up a beter spigot bearing, modify the release mechanism and fit the lightweight alloy flywheel see photo) I got cheaply on ebay. Engine & box separated under front of 1200S Coupe that's been taking up my time recently.

Problem found..!!! No drive to wheels..... teeth completely disappeared from pinion, CROWN wheel OK. In past experience of worn SIMCA final drives both parts have worn/been damaged. Must have picked the wrong 'box from a stock built up over 30 years from scrappers etc. Looks like I chose one that had suffered a 'dodgy' rebuild. Rest of box & clutch seem to have stood extra poke from Honda engine OK.

Can usually find things in there. It's after I've had a 'tidy up' and put things in 'safe places' that I suddenly can't find anything. Must get the Honda engine/SIMCA box finished so I can get back to work on the 1200S coupe. Mick

With the Blyton trackday looming up I decided to try to get it up & running again. Another SIMCA 1000 gearbox was found (this time one with a pinion with some teeth..!!). A few clearance etc issues regarding the light flywheel ans AP racing clutch meant I've kept the original arrangement. The SIMCA 1000 centre plate inside the CRX cover assembly had stood the 'hammer' quite well. While fitting the adaptor plate to take the Honda bellhousing, I lost a bit of weight by cuuting off the redundant CRX diff housing and a chunk of the steel plate to suit. If it's not ready for Blyton, I've still got the SIMCA powered FIAT 133 on the trailer as 'insurance'... Mick-

Will post photos of a SIMCA 1000 gearbox and the Civic/CRX bellhousingbefore I started to mix & match bits.. To mate the Honda engine to the SIMCA Gearbox I have to cut the Simca bellhousing back to the diff housing (Half the diff housing and the bellhousing are a one piece alloy casting) then fit a steel plate to take the Honda bellhousing, which luckily for me is a bolt on item and more or less the right depth. Using the Honda bellhousing gives me the clutch release mechanism complete and the original monting fr the starter motor. Am doing another for a SIMCA coupe soon where I can learn from the mk1 and tidy things up, add extra bracing & & miss out bits that proved unnecessary. The choice of the Honda engine is mainly because they rotated anti clockwise just like the SIMCA 1000 engines.

Have fitted lighter, bigger arched rear wings I got from a Belgian Autojumble to clear the rear wheels properly. Shell has needed a bit of welding... can be excused as it was dragged out of a scrapyard back in '85 to be built into a racer..!!

Fantastic stuff Mick! What kind of power does the Honda produce? I'm impressed it doesnt eat the Simca box. Keep up the great work!

The '88 CRX engine was rated at 130bhp on Honda's injection. It feels quick but have no idea what it turns out now on the Alfa Dellortos and SIMCA 1100 distributor. One day I might get it rolling roaded.... just satisfied it goes at present. Hopefully this SIMCA box will last the pace. I'm sure the other one was somebody's dodgy rebuild from the past.

I have to run it on bigger profile tyres..205x60x13 to up the gearing to suit the Honda engine better, hence the bigger arches. The gearboxes that come with a more suitable final drive came with the Rallye 2 and 3. Parts for those means hefty prices.

The guy who'd fitted the engine had mocked up a mounting arrangement to avoid the hole I've had to cut in the rear panel on my car. In Photo engine is resting on trailer winch as crossmember hadn't been completed... next job..!! After selling my supercharged SIMCA 1000 (to my brother), I finally had a bit of space... now I've filled it again..!!

Back to the one I'm trying to finish....After swapping some 98pcd wheels with my brother, i've finally got 4 matching 5 spoke Compomotives for this one. Behind 1200S coupe waiting patiently in garage for some attention

Now it's up & running again, time to get the welder busy to reinforce the rear chassis legs, currently one of the few original SIMCA structural bits still remaining. Have added a bit more silencing...It was a bit LOUD...

Had a day's 'testing' at Blyton yesterday. AS usual it had been a rush job to get finished. Didn't even have time to paint it all the same colour. When it was running it really did GO, but we were plagued by problems...brken throttle cable...sod's law, the only time I didn't have a spare with me. Bodged up and a few fast laps and the gearlinkage let go. A quick repair and various misfires developed. Plug leads were working loose as the SIMCA distributor I've rigged up to the Honda cam was vibrating badly at top revs. Added to that, the gearbox started wailing badly.... Time to load up..!!! At least I know what needs doing over the winter. The distributor is already in hand. On Ebay I've got a 2 wire distributor from the twin carbed Civics. I'm starting to think I'm asking too much f the SIMCA 1000 gearboxes so I may try a Renault UN1 box from my Espace 'spares car'.

Glad to hear it was up & running again, if sad it highlighted other problems. Being jealous seeing your exhaust headers too many times in here I could not resist buying some cheap new SOHC D16 ones via Ebay & USA. Hope they will not be too much of a pain adapting to DOHC mk1 Integra or CR-X!
