Are they still available at sensible prices?
I'm looking for a forward control chassis (steering wheel right at the front and engine somewhere further back) and it needs to be a proper chassis so I can put a non stressed body on it.
Now the obvious reason there are about a million VW based kits is that the floorpan/chassis is very convenient but I have had no dealings with VW stuff at all.
So, are they cheap enough to pick up? which bits can you swop round to get the best package?
It needs to stay van sized but will be a fair bit lighter (i think) than a stock VW bus if that makes a difference.
Other than that all i can really think of is the 4x4 delica, as far as I know that has a separate chassis.
I want the engine at the back, in the middle (or between the seats if i have to) so any one got any ideas?
The whole project has to stay as far under 2 grand as possible so the chassis has to be a sensible price, obvioulsy i know decent air cooled VW stuff is quite pricey now, but can you pick up a repairable rolling chassis with V5 for sensible money still?

I always thought the VW bus did not have a separate chassis it was just the bugs that did

Bearing in mind a recent thread about Scandinavian oddities, I think I may know where this is going and if so, I heartily approve!
I have also been eyeing up a 'spare' 400E chassis we have knocking about ;-)

I used to work in a boat yard, so working fiberglass from moulds holds no fears for me, gonna try mouldless foam and fiberglass construction.
That's all I'm saying for now.

From what I can gather its not that difficult, I read this, www.rqriley.com/frp-foam.htmand this, www.home-built-cord.com/Page4.htmland watched these, Its probably simpler for the home builder than making a buck, making a mould and then making the part as your pretty much skipping one whole step and it looks more space efficient.

The split and bay window VW Campers do have a seperate chassis. However, when the body is fitted it is welded in place and so becomes integral. This does of course mean that you could find a VW bus with tatty body work, and simple cut the body off it. Then carry out any necessary chassis repairs and you have a foundation.

I don't want to be mr doom and gloom but I can honestly not think of a worse way to get a rolling chassis! You'd pay about 3k for an absolute wreck of a bay, or double that for a wreck of a splitty to get a probably rusty chassis that is designed round the absolute boat anchor VW engines and awful suspension. On top of that the DVLA wouldn't recognise it as a separate chassis so the vehicle would need IVAing anyway so you might as well just have built your own chassis around some halfway decent running gear.

I never said it would be a good idea, just that it was possible. I found my Bay window Bus a fun drive, though the engine was a bit pants. The engine isn't a boat anchor, more of a lawn-mower and you should be able to pick up a snotter for less than 3 grand. The DVLA might be the problem though as you point out. I don't know what else is out there though.
