I've been offered a cheap Honda Shuttle 1.4 Auto by a customer at work. I've seen it around locally and it looks to be in good condition. Basically I want a heads up on what to look for, I know being Honda it should be pretty good but are there auto boxes any good? Photo of said car....... Thanks Robin

Pretty bullet proof. Autoboxes are very capable, mine is a bit lurchy when changing gear but it could do with an oil change. The 1.4 twin carb is a good, nippy engine, they run a bit rich out of the box, so some mixture tweaks are required. Ignore the suggestions about the 'carb spring mod' as the theory behind it is flawed, and I would suggest that any improvement to performance is to do with the mixture and ignition timing changes that accompany such a 'mod'. Worst area are sill ends/rear arches where the black trim attaches. All models on EF Civic go there [mine is no exception, despite the rest of the car being rust free]. Other than that, obvious stuff like blue smoke and mayo in the oil as you would be any other car. There's really not that much that goes wrong with them! You can't buy cheapy coilovers for EFs, but EG/EK coilies fit on [albeit an inch longer] You can get 'as low' with a few sneaky tricks though, I can fill you in if you decide to go ahead. Cool cars. VERY cool cars! I think Ian is your man for info, knowledge and advice. Ian's is an EC, although similar in looks they are a totally different beasty underneath. Mechanically, the later Shuttle is the same as my 'loon.

I know Ian's is different but he also knows his way around them pretty well and all the differences, things to look out for etc...hence my suggestion. Plus he's local (ish) to Robin.

Cool I'll probably try and give Ian a call later on it.
They have been on my radar for a while, I've just been paid and it's at a price that's almost too good to ignore. So I'm going to go and look at it and then work out if I can "actually" afford it! Although the Mrs.Sexwithyoureyes have reluctantly give the nod. TBH I'd suspected they were pretty build proof, Hondas of this age seem to be.
I just love the amount of glass you get with these, it's like sitting in a green house. Plus when they are low it seems to exentuate it even more. Plus it means I can take the Chevette off the road when the MOT runs out and the wellers will fit the Shuttle.
Anyway it's all rhetoric at the moment, until I go and see it tomorrow!

Mmm, 1.4 Auto ROAD BURNER. Despite the fact that it's gonna be as quick as a tortoise with a gammy leg Surprising nippy even with a one-leg special behind it.

Mmm, 1.4 Auto ROAD BURNER. Despite the fact that it's gonna be as quick as a tortoise with a gammy leg, I must insist you purchase it, on account of the awesomeness as illustrated above. Don't forget to maximise the potential of all that extra headroom by driving everywhere in a stove-pipe hat. Autocat at work seems to suggest it's 90bhp, surely it won't be that slow? It's gotta be quicker than the Chevette, even with the slush box! Anyway the performance is not the reason I want it. As for the hat sounds like a plan, Ab Lincoln look FTW!

Bader-matic for the win! I really quite like these, and I'm not normally an MPV fan.
What're the plans?

Cool cars. VERY cool cars! I've seen this pic a number of times and every time I do I think "Those wheels are horrible" followed quickly by "except in this instance." I've never rated them, always thought they were a clumsy wheel design, but they work beautifully on that Shuttle.

Not really sure I don't need the car, it's just too good an opportunity to ignore. Although if I keep it, wheels and lows.

Worst case Robin, buy it cheap and sell it at a profit on the 4G forum and have more funds for the Chevettte

Nope! Mine's an AR, 2wd 1st gen Shuttle is AE Like VIP says, back ends of the sills, rear arches and mayo/blue smoke. I'll add CV joints to that list. Do it Robin! Lows are easy and they look awesome low, it's even wheeled up already!

Thanks Ian, I think I must have copied your phone no. wrong into my new phone as I tried to call you regarding tyres and Shuttles, and ended up speaking to some random woman! Needless to say she knew curse word all about tyres or Honda Shuttles! I think the wheels are Exip from my very quick look at the car. I just hope it's still available on Monday. Fingerscrossed
