Hi Jim Thanks for your comments regarding my SD1, it really is very clean with only the odd blemish. I wasn't at those event's as I hadn't bought it then. Regarding your equipment. Are you still in touch with the Lancs Bobbys that commented on the thread a bit back? They'dbe able to advise what style radio/handset you need and siren type (i.e. klaxons or wailers)? If not, I'll put a request out on a FB forum I'm on that's full of local bobbys and some enthusiast geeks (like me), so we should be able to pin it down. Klaxons aren't a problem, I know of a set that could probably be made available, or wailers depending on type should also be obtainable. Great to know the POLICE sign moulds are available as they're pretty rare for certain versions now, most were skipped once the cars came out of service. Although a rear shot of the car would be good to make sure you get the right one. A good friend of mine is a DCI at Lancs, he might be able to get some info from retired traffic lads too if you get stuck. You'll be needing the correct door crest I expect as well? Let me know :-) I haven't been on this thread for ages and it's great to see the progress made. Regarding the sirens, they were klaxons on this car, definitely not wailers. Earlier in the thread there was mention of the extra rear reds and how they flashed. They both illuminated together and not alternately. I will make a few enquiries and see if any of the older guys in the vehicle workshop or the radio workshop (who would have worked on this car) are still around. They might have some photos they could share, or details of the equipment fitted. Ken

Hi Ken,
thanks for getting back in touch and with such great information, it is invaluable!
I'm in the process of getting quotes to get the shell painted, then it is engine building and reassembly time. When its done you will have to come for a drive!

I had a couple of hour spare today, so I headed over to the garage to continue stripping and prepping the front axle. I had previously started to dismantle it which was a messy job with an explosion of parts across the garage floor. Messier still, as most of it was saturated in old engine oil from the leaky V8. This meant that the subframe had no rust on it and all the bolts were well lubed, so actually pretty helpful! Lots of the bits I pulled from the front axle were surface rusted, so I thought I would try out some DEOX fluid. The idea is you just put it in a bucket with some water and it attacks the rust, leaving behind shiny metal. I mixed up a pretty strong solution just to try it out. I was quite impressed as it was only in there for about an hour and yet some of the slightly less rusted stuff came out very well. It will all get done again when I have more time. My front struts were in really good shape. No serious rust, and the stub axles were perfect. However I wanted to replace the strut inserts for new ones. When the car left the factory the strut body would have formed the outer part of the damper. A replacement damper comes as a cartridge that slides into the strut body, but they arnt quite the same as the originals. The only way to get original dampers is to buy complete original struts which have the factory dampers already inserted in them. So that is what ive done. £75 a side isn't too bad really. They had surface rust, so along with the subframe and new track control arms I de-greased them, key sanded them and then painted them in very hard epoxy again. The original paint was curse word, and just flaked off in places! Next time I'm in the garage hopefully I can start bolting it all back together. And now for some exciting news. I have finally saved up enough to get it painted! I'm trying to work out where to take it, someone decent and with an eye for detail. Ive been looking in the south east but am also considering travelling further afield. Watch this space!

Haha! I can confirm it will be white. Its the stripes that have me scratching my head. The car was originally fitted with stripes just on the front and rear wings. The doors were all white, apart form a Lancs Police crest on the front doors. But I like the look of the full length stripes that its sister cars had, so I might take restorer's license (if there is such a thing) and do full length striepage!

The wing stripes looked so much better - IMHO. But I'll still be happy to come and see the finished beast when it's ready.

Ken, Cool photos, please keep them coming! Do you recognise these switches? I was given them and told the came from and SD1, but I'm aware that they had a variety of swithes. And when you say Klaxon's were they 2 tone air horns? or though a speaker? Its also really hard to tell from the photos but were the stripes red and blue? Or orange and blue? I think for film work, probably met police livery, but i wont be doing that. I'm not so interested in film work, i just want it back to a running car.

This is all very exciting isn't it. Is the engine going to be " standard " ?? Or you going to go for something sneaky ?

The switches are not exactly the same, but I'm struggling to remember what ours looked like, and where they would have been positioned. I do remember that there was a large calibrated speedometer in the centre of the dash, above the centre console. The klaxons were two tone air horns, not through a speaker on the SD1 of this period. The stripes started off almost red, but faded through to orange over time. The central stripe was dark blue.

They didn't always stay the right shape. This was one of the Y-reg Rovers that was replaced by the D-reg ones.

I guess that makes mine even rarer!
Yes mine originally had a calibrated speedo in a box built out of the centre of the dash. I can see the impression in the dash foam where it used to be and the captive threads. I think this must have failed during service and been replaced with the one it has now which sits in the dash above the passenger glove box and is in a moulded plastic housing same as in the early 800's.
