Personally I think there is definatly room for a "stuntless" Car program. If a magazine like program was produced that was serious about cars it would have a sizeable audience. Take a look at the approach of the Best Motoring DVDs (check this Trailer). I'm not interested in modern cars particularly, I do love cars though and I'll happily watch that. None of this comparing times around the track week on week stuff like TG does... Just once in a while get all the equivilent cars together, some racing drivers and do a Battle. Compelling TV for sure. Report on Motorracing, F1 to Club level, Rallying, motorsport in general. Pick up car niches and do a feature on them, us lot, microcar owners, drifting, tunnel runners, ringers, any interesting car tribe. If you are going to do a challenege that involves old bangers, set yourself something that will give you good press in the car communities, build a sub £1,000 drag car... then take it to as many shows as you can, film it, be active. Enter the scumball rally.. then enter the same car in the gumball rally ... Feature extraordinary cars (like you did with Red Victor 1). Feature historically interesting cars (best motoring feature on Mazda 787b here). Do not make me have to do a TV show/DVD series as well........

Hot wire I think you have hit the nail on the head there and probably put what I wanted to say better than I did. Facts and figures shows like used car roadshow do interest me but are hardly exciting. What you describe above would make for a hell of show. The problem is getting it passed the people who sign off shows at places like C5.
You never know though, with funding it "could" be possible to do an RR program but more realisticly how about some sort of RR internet TV? Get users to create videos and have a section of the site for them?

Indeed, it would be great. But it's convincing the suits that there's an audience for it. Don't let that stop you, though - make it happen HW

Ratty - must admit that VBH has lost some of her appeal but that squeal when she gets a motor sideways does odd things to me!
I used to like Tiff but my wife considers him extremely annoying and obnoxious! Yet, she'll watch Top Gear! I don't understand. Tiff seems like a top, friendly bloke compared to the tall, curly haired buffoon at the head of TG!

64Impala - Despite what others have said I think you have a good team with a good chemistry, I think Tom Ford is particularly good and admire what Jon Bentley has done with The Gadget Show.
I don't want to tell my grandmother to suck eggs but I think if you make Fifth Gear for the true car fans you could really gain some cult status. The show needn't be about pointless stunts and celeb features, it just lowers the tone.
I do believe there's a wealth of car related stuff out there to report and be presented in a genuinely informative way.

Maybe they could get Ade Edmundson to present it with Ritchie Butler Henderson. It could have more appeal as a Bottom/Fifth gear hybrid. Maybe? ;D

Short of giving us guys an hour slot of prime time TV each week to put across our ideas (which is not very likely). Top gear, 5th gear and all that other juno motor TVO is curse word, because...... - It mainly new cars (it a given)
- They try to be "cool" and "hip" by smashing old cars up
- Usually the presenters are half arsed junos who know sh!te all adout cars.
- and finally it designed to appeal to everyone take Top Gear how many people do you know who watch it even if they arnt into cars? loads and thats why it doesn't really appeal to car nuts, petrol heads and the like.
As for VBH, I don't know shes alright but you'd want to gag her right? Retro-Rides TV programme anyone?

Do not make me have to do a TV show/DVD series as well........ No need, I'll be on it soon. There has been delays, some my doing, and some straight from him above and him below, but actually getting involved annd mucky with old cars has helped the projects credibility massively! ....

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

More to the point, would they get more/different viewers. This is what I mean about them becoming part of the motoring community (of all types) in the UK.. If they totally embraced it, and became an active part in the community, they could actually grow their audience without having to resort to apeing TG style stunts and celebrities.

If Ade says no, Chris Barrie is massively into his motors - as Streetrules knows! He's good on telly too - albeit not in the same anarchic way as Ade!

I agree but - the suits that fund these programmes can't visualise that and thats the problem that these journo/media guys are faced with..... Fact of life. TG is successfull so therefore any Car related TV programme must be in the same format to succeed because it's a proven format. Robin - no I wouldn't want to gag her

even the name is a rip off of TG I think that may have been intentional - it was first presented by a full host of TG refugees - back when TG was rubbish and jezza had gone south from the tv side of things. It was quentin wilson, vbh and tiff IIRC.
