I have recently been given some previously unseen photographs from an ex Reliant designer showing the 1973 4x4 Scimitar GTE chassis and running gear complete with anti lock brakes developed by GKN and FF (Ferguson Formula) Developments. I knew one car had been built as a prototype and used by the chief engineer at Reliant as his own transport until he sold the car to a private collector in Cheshire in 1978. The car was last seen in Stockport in 1980, but it has dissapeared off the face of the earth . I would live to trace the car to get some pictures of it. So if anyone knows of a Scimitar registered MRF 519L then I would love to hear from you!! (is doesn't exist on the DVLA site ) It looks as if it has Volvo wheels? Can anyone confirm what they are from? There are a few more pictures of it on the prototype section of my site: www.sporting-reliants.com/Prototypes.htmCheers Scimmie ;D

Could've brought 4wd to rally stages years befor the Quattro! Looks like an ace idea. Woner if its possible to recreate. Perhaps with XR4x4 running gear.

Many years ago there was a write up about a a guy who converted his Scimitar to 4x4 using the Sierra XR4x4 running gear, but i've never seen the car or heard of it ever since.

There was a 4x4 capri used for rallying in the early 70`s as well. 72 RAC rally IIRC and it ended up in a lake ;D Pretty sure that was a FF as well (Ferguson formula) very possibly the same box as the scimitar. Not sure when it happened but 4 wheel drive was banned for rallying in the 70`s. The ban was lifted just before Audi released the quattro. I think audi planned the quattros release to coincide with it being lifted but noone else thought it wouldbe much of an advantage. I don't think it looks like it would be such a heavy setup looking at it, well not too much heavier than most 4 wheel drive systems of the 80`s. FF also built at least one monza 4x4 as well

weight was a big problem but so was the handling as I recall. They had a lot of understeer, I don't know what (if any) centre diff they ran

It looks as if it has Volvo wheels? Can anyone confirm what they are from? That style is off a P1800 E / ES (B20 engined), 140 or 160 series. Possibly exactly the same wheels on all those models (as opposed to different widths etc) but I'm not certain. ya know i was marvelling at htem earlier too slater, bit of a starange setup? J I agree. However, as the arc of possible movement for the top coilover mount is so minimal, does it actually matter that it's not rigid mounted?

Its not realy that its not solid mounted (it should be though!) its more the amount of leverage on the lower mounts. I would much prefer to see a direct acting chassis mount, with no leverage - J
