I paid £150 for my Mk2 Bready (Bargainpages) and £195 for my Mk2 Metro (Autotrader) Both MOT'd but tatty. I bought them to tidy up but I could have just used them straight away.
You will find something in your budget and sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time to get it. You have to be patient and try not to get your heart set on a certain car. I've never been a one badge person (hence why I'm on here) and I'll give any car a chance.
I've always had luck with the Bargain pages, Gumtree and Thiefbay. Most people use places they can advertise free to get rid of a cheap car.

as for cheap retros, look withint 60 miles of where you live on ebay, with a maximum price and then select all the years before 1990 and I'm SURE you will find something, thats how i bought my old Audi Coupe!! worked for me

You just missed a 1955 Standard 10 for £400 with T&T on this very forum. Yeah, it needed work but you could do the work as you went along.
People keep telling me you can't get cheap classic/retro cars. They just aren't looking. When you see the right thing you have to move on it though. That Standard was only for sale a few hours.
You have to take a punt sometimes. I bought a couple of cars sight-unseen off eBay which is madness really but I had a "good feeling" about them and I might even have been half-right
They were in fact no worse wrecks than cars I'd actually gone to see and ended up buying LOL
You also have to be prepared to travel. I'm off to Taunton to see a car on Monday. I have another I am buying which is in Devon.

I know its not strictly retro, but I picked up my 99 Peugeot partner for 375 notes. It was tatty but had 6 months tax and test on it. So they are out there, just dig deep and search hard! Good luck!

You will spend an eternity hunting if you set your heart on a specific car, in a specific price range. Be open minded, keep an eye on all the usual places and see what comes up Go obscure and you'll be surprised at what you can find for very cheap. Wise words above now thats a journey if you want some one to share the driving give me a shout I'm not doing them both on the same day LOL We went the other route, made a list of potential new motors then spent a full day touring to see them all, 500+ miles in 1 day Do it - and don't forget the pics an roadtrip report when you get back

They're not very strong and electical problems that come with old ones probably make them in the "Most cars are better" catagory.
