I know these threads go up all the time, and you all must get sick of them, but I need help I passed my test last year, i'm still 17, 18 in April. I'm driving around in a 95 micra and i'm bored of it. I want something retro with that awesome factor... But I don't know what to get, obviously it has to have a small engine for insurance purposes. I've got an Imp just now, but that's off the road and will be for some time due to the work that has been done on it needing completely re done. So the question is.... What to get? I've thought about maybe another Imp? a riva(the insurance on this was high even though it's a 1.5 : Any other suggestions? Should say, would be looking to buy around end of Feb time, and should about about £1200 to spend Cheers

A 850 or 1000cc mini in good nick should be possible for that sort of money. Great fun to drive if not partularly fast, cheap to insure and reasonable fuel economy.

Get a fiat panda - mega cheap, learn to repair it yourself (very easy), and group 1 insurance. Plus they are nippy little boxes ;D

Stay bored with the Micra and use that as motivation to get the Imp done quicker without distracting yourself with another car that you'll invariably want to tweak. That'll also leave you with £1,200 to throw into the Imp to move things along even quicker. I've been there, done that with the whole 'interesting daily' thing and currently tool around in a bog standard giffer spec Demio which is great because I'm always itching to crack on with my project cars and still enjoy daily life in something really reliable, economical, comfortable and dependable...even if it's got the all character of cardboard. Just my 2 pence worth

agree and disagree. I have a semi-sensible-retro-daily and even that bores me and I can't do with being bored. So I am thinking of punting it on for a quasi-sensible-classic-daily.
Your daily has to be the compromise car, for lots of reasons, but it doesn't have to be dull.
Your problem is your age is against you to insure anything interesting. So sadly the best option may be to run the Micra, build up NCB and the Imp, then move onto the Imp as a daily and sell the Micra to fund the next project vehicle...
Keep the Micra tidy to maximise its resale value rather than faffing about ratting it or any such sillyness.

I have also thought of it from that point of view, only reason i considered selling the micra now is. I'm not on my own policy so it's getting me no NCB, the tax is up in Feb, the MOT is up in Sept and it won't pass with out new sills, 2 headlights, and a new rear light.
So although you said not to rat it, once the MOT is up, it's obviously either scrap or repair(i'd scrap it) So if i want to make it abit more awesome, you think it'd be worth just going down the route of having fun with it? Obviously that'd still be cheaper than £1300 and i get abit more fun out of it?
What'd you think?

Wouldnt rat it, as it might be a 'mod' in the eyes of the insurance, and being 17 if/when you have a prang, the insurers probably wont pay out.

Already had that prang so that'll be the insurance up at the renewal... I had considered urban camo as i could keep the majority of it white so technically wouldn't have to declare it? Or would i?

I agree with Akku, i get bored off my tits by dull dailys, but like MM i hate getting distracted by daily tweeking when there's awesome projects just waiting to be done..
I compromise badly, right now I have three daily's, (Range Rover 4.6, Tdi Golf Mk4, and a 328i e36 Convertible) I use the BM if it's nice the Range Rover when it's not, and the golf if i need to do any long trips or for general hacking about (50mpg) ftw...
not much a compromise, but hey i said i was curse word at it, I only have two projects at the moment though which is something of a first for me one major and the other just a tart up job, realisation hit me like a ton of bricks last year, that there was no way that four major restorations were ever going to get done, so I sold the lot keeping the one that matters most to me, when that's done i'll get another big project but NOT before, otherwise i can see me twenty or thirty years down the line having awesome cars on paper but the same bunch of rotten undrivable wrecks in the workshop! a golden rule is it ALWAYS costs more to build a car than buy it...
Personally if i were you i'd sell the project Imp and the Micra and buy one good retro car that you like, maybe a decent Imp, Beetle, Mini, Minor or similar, you'll have something to drive and be proud of and you wont be bored by it when you drive it, plus at your age you'll probably be doing something in the next few years college/uni/work/training/moving out ect and lugging a project with you is a pain when your 19/20, (ask me how i know, I still have the same project car now aged 30 that i did when i was 17)

If I was in your position, I'd go for a 998cc Mini. You won't lose money on it, it's easy to maintain, bits are plentiful and the insurance will be cheap.

I understand exactly what you are saying, i'm at college just now, and i am for the next 18 months with 2 years on the job training(away on the rigs) But we've got a big garage at the house which has pretty much been taken over by me. So storage isn't an issue for it. Unfortunately i can't get rid of the Imp due to the amount that's went into it, i wouldn't get it back So i'm going to need to soldier on with it it was just what to do for a daily... but i think following what folk have said in here and running the micra to the ground could be a plan! Does anyone know if you NEED to declare a colour change to the insurance, or would just telling the DVLA suffice?

tricky one.
A mate got his insurance cancelled on him for a non-standard paint job but that was on a classic car policy... Heard of people getting insurance cancelled for STICKERS let alone paint jobs, but that was in the papers and, dunno, do you believe what you read in the papers?
When I was 17 and pigging about with a Morris Minor my insurance told me any cosmetic mods were fine. When I was somewhat older and wanted to put some different alloys on a Lexus I had the insurance said "no way"
It'd phone and ask before you do anything that way you know for sure. If they say no, don't do it. Easy as that.
With the Micra in the condition you describe, yeah, I know what you mean about have some fun and scrap it, but check with the insurance first...

If you do decide to keep a "boring" motor and concentrate on one project, make sure your boring car is good on fuel. I'm really aching to get some free time to start my next project but having a cheap to run car has already opened up a bit of free cash for me.

The only thing that puts me off phoning to check is, I've heard horror stories of people phoning to check things, saying they won't do it, then the insurance pop round to check and find other undeclared bits and cancel the insurance.

Sorry, but if it should be mentioned on the policy then I think you're being a bit irresponsible for not claiming it. PLEASE (for everyones sake) remove the bits or get them declared pronto. Even more so if you've got a claim pending.

Unfortunately I can't get rid of the Imp due to the amount that's went into it, I wouldn't get it back And thus you have learned something that some people never learn about pouring money into old cars. You've talked down the Micra a bit too, so maybe now's the time to get rid of it before it needs a cash injection. In your age bracket, the insurance mob are just looking to do you over. If they can double-do you (huge premium then deny a claim because of an undeclared mod) they absolutely will.

I'm 18 (19 in june) and iv got a morris minor pickup, id recomend a moggie due to the fact that there cheap to buy and run (if you can live with the 1000cc engine) there easy to modify and work on and the after market parts are easy and cheap to find, can do engine mods for more power if needed and it has the retro look. plus its tax exempt
