well the pics didnt disappoint as ususal (that means they never do lol) re the pricing what do they go for on ebay just out of interest, reason I ask is they seem cheap imo? have you waxed them yet or is that just virgin wood? awesome skills however. funny you should mention sparkys, had a quote for two 5ft striplights and a switch in the loft the other day......£90!!!! I mentioned we were in a recession but he seemed none too impressed haha I would say you are right, it is cheap, at about 50 minutes per item, the "labour cost" must be along the minimum wage level. That said, I was going to offer the first few "For Free" based on people making a donation to the Air Ambulance or a Cancer Charity of their choice and giving me feedback on what they thought of the knobs. I have only used some candle wax on them to bring the life out, Danish oil or bees wax would make them look even better. Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.

In November? Legend! LOL LOL LOL !!! Yes, you are right.... Nicola has photos of me doing a BBQ at Christmas in the snow in shorts and FlipFlops. The electrician was a bit shocked today when he saw me cutting the lawn in my Safety Toe-Teckters. It will be some time before the woodwork has balanced the books, if you add up the tools, paving, shed, materials and electrification costs etc.... I suspect it will be some time. I do however want to start looking at getting a website set up (I know nothing about IT and such stuff) to help me sell stuff and get whatever I make, known. Having been unemployed this year afer redundancy, something like this can keep one afloat.

Superb update Grizz. Nice work there as usual. I also feel that, whilst I get the impression you are a fair individual, I suspect you are undervaluing your work.

These are the knob badges I have: Hi mate, anything is possible. I have just been looking at Ebay, at St Christopher badges and other items to add to the top of the knobs and other items. Also bought some other items that could find their way onto stuff from the shed. Regarding a deal, I am not sure there is much of a deal to be had from a bulk buying perspective, but prepping more than one to accept your badges, that can be done. Ideally I would need a sample as every knob would have to be individually made up and fitted. If I were to find a spade bit (or whatever they are called ) in the right size, then it would make things easier.

Looks good, also another suggestion for the gear knobs, have you got acsess to a lazer cutter or simlilar? You could flatten off the top and engrave 1st 2nd etc etc onto it? Either way keep up the progress

Either way keep up the progress Loads one can do if you have access to various sexy tools , but for now it will have to stay fairly basic. Also once screwed into the gear lever the numbers may not sit right. (Easily remedied by adding a bit of loo paper into the hole to stop it from threading in too far) Thanks.

For those who are still looking into this thread, or still interested. Unpacked the wood this morning, sorting size and shape and then storing it all under the workbench. As always, Harley was on hand to do a security check of the car to see if it was all safe. She usually charges down to the garage in the morning when I go down there and cant wait to get into the garage or shed to do her inspection. Likewise, she has not got a care about the sawdust flying when I am turning wood, or sanding stuff. Once packed, this was my little supply. I mentioned before that Nicola's mum had a bit of Candle holder envy when she saw the first item I had turned...... Today I got the piece of American Tulip wood (I think that is what it is) that I laminated yesterday, onto the lathe and turned the candle holder. Size is again about 190mm diameter. The wood looks nice when finished, but is a real pain to get to look good, it tends to rip a bit across the grain. Still, I am happy with the finish. I did make it so that one could add a few candles on the bottom as well, but Nicola reckons just one on the top looks better. What is your opinion ?? Single candle. And so another weekend come to an end.

Some very nice work there.
Good score on the wood as well. Some very nice looking bits. I would be in the market for one of your nicely turned knobs, but I would want to make mine myself. I have been thinking about knobs for the skoda, and might try to make one for that.
Any, keep up the good work.

grizz, both look good, 1 or more candles suit, the design works either way. if thats intentional...... genius, if its pure luck then claim it was intentional lol
they'd sell well on ebay I feel, along with the gearknobs.
on the badge front if you did get a badge space on the knobs the list of manufacturers you could target is endless, a grizz ferrari knob, a grizz porsche knob etc etc
they could become known as a "grizz knob".....as popular a brand as Tesco and Asda soon......ok I may be getting ahead of myself here lol
keep the updates coming please mate

Awesome work mate, really impressed. But the rude mind of mine can't help sniggering at knobs and captive rings....

Those gear knobs look great, but I agree with lewist123...I'd want to make my own (and pay you of course) ;D
That said, there must be a market for them, and I recon they'd fetch a few bob on Ebay!

Nice score on the wood!
What I have done in the past for 'mass production' is make up a thick steel template, then rough out the shape quickly then use the steel to then get the next cut done then finish in your preferred method.
I can't remeber the names of the tools - the straight edged tool, not a gouge, was my preferred finish method, no sanding if possible. But they had a tendancy to snag if you weren't careful! Many a ruined piece consigned to the fire due to tiredness/lazyness/carelessness!
I wonder what happend to all my dads lathe tools... Best ones were really long handled (a couple were 2') with huge blades so really easy to aim and get a perfect cut.
Keep up the good work!!
How about a vertically laminated knob? so the stripes run top tp bottom?

Hmmmm, if you search PATHTAGS on E-bay you might find some inspiration, they are gift/trading objekts in geocaching.

Wood turning ftw.
I havent done it for a few years mainly because of not having a lathe anymore.
If you start knocking up gearknobs I'd definitely be interested

Ideally people must get to know the products and associate them with great finish and uniqueness. If I end up redundant again, I need to be able to pay my bills from this.... hopefully one day there will be enough interest, business from it. Currently it is all a learning process.
