Had this as my daily for quite a few years before getting the Xantia to save some pennies last year Here it is: After having it advertised for quite a while but it not selling, I changed my mind, decided to keep it and give it some tlc A trip to a fellow retro rider a couple of weeks ago and swapping some mushroom interior trim I had with another Mercedes club member yeilded this bootful of goodies: Today I started. First job fit my new blue electric rear blind (previous one was mushroom) to my new blue rear shelf. The original shelf was quite badly faded: New shelf and blind fitted. Much better Next, door panels. It's a long story but the door panels didn't match. The old: When I had my car hifi install fitted I had sound deadened the doors. Due to this the door panels never really fitted properly so the sound deadening was removed before I fitted the new panel: Did the same on the other side: Still have to find and fit the other electric seat knobs but it's getting there Fitted the replacement central locking pump I got: Unfortunately not taking the battery with me meant I couldn't see if it works now Boot full of more bits to play with soon ;D Removed the front bumper ready to replace some of the chrome sections: Wire brushed and soaked the fixings with WD40 in preparation for removal I'm going to clean and paint the inside of the chrome sections before fitment. I have a decent second hand centre section and a new passenger side corner. Might need the other corner too depending on what it looks like when I get the bumper apart. I did see a secondhand one on ebay last week, but it went for nearly the cost of a new one so I didn't bother bidding More soon......

I love the W126, they have a commanding presence which seems missing on later S Class cars. It is the last Mercedes I truly like.

It is lowered all round with Lorinser lowering springs. Today's progress consisted of just buying eight stainless machine screws for the door panel trims Report coming up on the Xantia though

Been ebaying today so a micro-update The car had seperate electric rear seats (very rare factory option) but they weren't heated. I gathered up the required parts some time ago but never got round to getting it done When I converted to leather some time ago I fitted the heater pads but never got the switches and wiring in. As I was going through things to get the sale items out the garage today I set about trying to find all the bits. no mean feat as I'm not very organised First little job was to fit the other buttons to the front seat switches as I had found my spare electric seat switches: Looks much better and as the door panels fit properly now the buttons don't pop off when you shut the door Next was preparing the tackle for the rear seat heaters: Found the switches and the trims for the back doors with the two switch cut outs, one for the electric window switch and one for the seat heater switch: I had several looms in the 'seat' box in the garage at home. Of course none of them were labelled it turned out I had taken the one for the front heated seats with me not the rear (the switches are different) so I'll have to delve back into the box in the garage at some point and hope I can find the right one More soon...... ;D

I'm so annoyed I didn't snap this up when you had it for sale. Glad to see it getting some love. How is it running wise - usual W126 smokey start up?
SEL's are for winners as well.

Pretty good running wise, or it was when I was using it. My father had a similar car (a 500 SE) and we had the stem seals done on that as they had hardened. It's not too bad a job to do and I do have some just in case

My Uncle who sadly died last year used to talk of the five Ps. 'Perfect Preparation Prevents curse word Poor Performance' And so today it turned out to be. I removed the bumper before Christmas and had been diligently soaking the fixings in WD40 on a regular basis It's regularly commented that they never come undone and you always need to buy new fixings. Well it's not true (see my comment above ) I undid them today, one bolt snapped but all the others came out dead easy and can be reused Photos: Chrome removed: Bumper needs a good clean: Re-useable fixings: The one that snapped (currently soaking in WD40 : Chrome really was in poor condition: Now I just need to save up for a new driver's side corner I might actually get a centre section too as then it will all be new and with some protection will last well

Bought a set of walnut picnic tables for my Fathers 55 plate S320 and they don't fit So rather than sending them back I bought them and have decided to fit them to my W126. I've wanted a set for a while but they are really rare. I did once see a set for a W126 on ebay but they went for about £400 Here are the W220 ones: And from the back (the table parts are removeable) Fortunately I had a spare pair of W126 seat backs: I removed the map pocket: And the table part from the W220 seat back: I then marked out the W126 seat back: And cut it: That's as far as I got as I need to make a wooden frame to space the table away from the seat. I can't resses it as the mountings for the headrests get in the way. I did however manage to save that last bumper chrome fixing More soon when I get some wood

Bought a replacement exhaust section from here a while ago (thanks Bladerunner), also got a bargain exhaust system from ebay from a 560 SEL. Well it isn't from a 560 SEL: It's too short and is therefore a SE one. I've contacted the seller as it was clearly listed as being from an SEL So, car up on wheel ramps to aid access. First time it's been started for a while too, started first time Full exhaust removed it comes off dead easy in one piece on these: One of the downpipes was holed: Gave me an excuse to use my new reactive helmet: Unfortunately it didn't work (it did when I first got it and tested it) Fiddled with the batteries and it did flicker into life so I'm going to try new batteries. After welding with an oldy worldy mask: Then fitted the new section I got from Bladerunner and re-fitted the exhaust on to the car. Although I need a new seal for one of the joints I started it and it seems gas tight Sounds much better now and despite not being run for some time sounded sweet So if anyone has or knows the whereabouts of any new or excellent W126 V8 downpipes going cheap please let me know

Had a eurika moment today. Been looking for the wiring loom for the heated rear seats for ages. I wondered if it was in the box with the wiring loom in from when I broke the blue 500 SEL I had. Well I must have fitted the loom to that car because it was So now (hopefully tomorrow) I can fit the loom and get the rear door panels refitted and the interior back together ;D More soon
