1982 Toyota Corolla DX Coupe (KE70) Name - Kitsos LHD – From Greece Originally 1.3 (4K) engine Replaced with 1.5 (5K) engine Manual 5spd 281,755km / 175,074mi on the clock. (When I got it) VIN: JT1C0KE7000****** Model Code: KE70L-ECMDSW Many of you will be familiar with the road-trip to collect this car, the thread is here: Greece - Leeds via RRG11 (Full write up)Ok so its back home, so what’s it like? Well it looks good under the bonnet… Not quite as clean at the bottom of this side but still good. Wonder what’s hiding under the covers… Stickers on the dash will have to go regardless of sentiment. (Danai stuck them on there as a child, her dad worked in forestry). Don’t know about the steering wheel cover I quite like it, maybe just a fresh one. Gear stick gator not very nice, Basic aftermarket stereo. Clean Door shuts. Some tatty bits, quite a lot of trim stuck on like this... Bumper corners could be improved, right hand one is from a different car. Similar story with the wing mirrors (oops no pics), one’s casing cracked and the other is again from another car adapted to fit. There are a few minor dents… Front wing… (Also note the speckles where stone chips have been covered) Behind rear wheel arch… Passenger door… It’s got 4 good alloys (13”) and near new tyres, 3 good arches and 1 crusty. Front Left- Good Front Right - Good Rear Left - Crusty Rear Right - Good I guess it has had a minor scuff on that arch which has let the rust get hold. It appears to only be on the outer arch panel the inner arch still feels solid. I don’t think its hiding any horrors underneath. I’m sure it’s been under-sealed to protect not cover over in this case. I think that sums it up, It’s a good honest car that deserves a tidy up.

Epic wheel arch repair there if you werent looking directly at the car you'd never spot it! Looks a solid base to show some love too, any chance of whacking it with the lowering stick?

Yep the bathroom sealant is a perfect colour match to the paint colour, I can barely see the repair at all tbh.

I removed the rear seats and boot carpet to clean and inspect the condition underneath. Looks good. Found some Old Drachma Coins. After a simple wipe with a sponge. And put it all back together again.

With a bit of work that could be very good indeed - I reckon it'll be worth investing in a good cavity waxing, and maybe go over the underseal with something to make sure it's all stuck on properly and has no "pockets" in it to collect water.

Just put all the necessary paperwork into the safe hands of the DVLA. Their efficiency should ensure a UK registration soon, maybe even by the end of the week! Fingers crossed.

A week ago I took Kitsos to the motornutz.co.uk fish and chip meet in Rotherham. I had a good time and chatted to some nice folk. Towards the end of the gathering I decided it was a good idea to have a little poke at the crusty wheel arch. Well I'm sure we all know what happens if you pick a scab and this time was no different. Yep you get a hole! It was dark and late so I stopped there. I know rust does not get any better with time and that ignoring it would inevitably double the size of the job. By picking it and making it UGLY I was forcing myself to deal with it even though I'm worried about getting in over my depth.

Today I decided to see the real extent of the problem so out came the grinder and knot wheel. Yeah that made a bigger hole. A bit of grinding to tidy up the raggy bits and marked up where I thought it would be good to trim it. I'm really new to this kind of work. I have only done basic rust repairs a couple of times on rubbish cars I couldn't really care less about. I have never done a wheel arch repair before and this is a car I don't want to bodge. Well I have to cut it somewhere. I made my choice and for better or worse made the first big cut. This old repair is over the bad metal so I cut that out too. Will need to cut out a bit more to the left to get that pitted bit out as well. This is where I have left it for now. I'm not sure how far to keep cutting in one go. The bottom edges at both sides will need work too but is it best to tackle them separately or to keep cutting and tackle it as one. Thoughts on the best way to progress appreciated, Cheers Steve.

Thoughts on the best way to progress appreciated, Cheers Steve. Just a year ago the repair panels where still available through toyota. That's probably your best bet. Good luck on the repair. It looks to be in amazing condition for an old toyota!

great work getting it back to the UK! if you don't already know about it use this site: www.toyodiy.com/got all the toyota parts numbers, and sometimes the diagrams. I find it easier to get the part numbers on the website then go to my local toyota dealers with a list! Although most old toyota parts are available the parts dept guy looked a bit shocked when told i need parts for a 1979 Hiace ;D

I love the optimism but I went in to Leeds Toyota dealer today and very meekly asked if a rear arch repair panel was available. Although I wasn't laughed out the dealership as I half expected, they told me the rear 1/4 panel was discontinued and couldn't find a repair part at all. They did give me this lovely print out... ... so I know they were looking at the right car at least. Is the part genuinely no longer available or did they just not find it I'm not sure. Anyone know the part number?
