Hi guys. Thought I would post this up here. A friend has rescued the pedal kart in the pics below. It is a Kettler , and they seem to be the Bee's knees of these type karts. Let me know if I am wrong. This one looks and is as bad as it looks, but his boy has absolutely fallen in love with it. The steering is buggered, brakes non-existant and clearly, paint and rust are issues too. That said, he wants me to see if I can resurrect it, as he had saved it from the crusher, and as I said to him, if I had seen it on a trip to the tip, it would have found its way into my car for sure. Anyone got spares, or repaired one before?? Please add your views and opinions on here. Right.... lets see what you got !!! ;D ;D ;D

not got spares or repaired one but have an opinion. Me and my brother got one each for xmas when we were young (7 or 8 years old) and we basically lived on them. The rear wheels were plastic and over the years we wore them down until they were useless (they were hollow so when worn down they just fell apart)not because they were badly made, we just used them so much. The brake is just a handbrake isn't it iirc? Soooo much fun and RWD.

i used to have one of those too. the breaks are indeed just the hand break... but they're fixed gears too so you can stop with your feet. that also means j-turns and wheelies are easy and really fun. i wish i could still fit in one i remember the axle mount on mine broke at some point and the fix was a hand carved hardwood bushing and a some scrap metal bend into shape and attached with some roofing screws. tbh it just looks like the whole thing could do with a strip down respray and relube. all of the drive/brakes and steering should be a doddle to fabricate.

Thank guys. Rav, you are a lifesaver. I will see what he wants, as any money spent on it is for his account. This design and look is in the back of my head, but need to check with him first, and maybe his son wants it different..... you know what 18 month old kids can be like.

i used to have one of these as a kid too, i used to tear up and down the road on it til the plastic tyres wore through. i recently went to a farm park with my girlfriend and her little lad, they had a load of them for the kids to play on and some adult sized ones as well! it kept me entertained for hours ;D i'm going to start collecting some parts and have a go at making my own. www.ferryfarm.co.uk/SEFS/ID.67/SEFE/ViewItem.asp

Been on Ebay, a few on there, and even more on Gumtree. They range in price from £20 upwards. Makes one wonder about the effort put into a resto project. I picked up the one I need to look at restoring, it is as rough as a badgers arsse, but I will give it a go. Loads of rust, lifting the coated paint surfaces and causing severe rust in places.

I, like most here it would seem, had one as a child and I also did my first handbrake turn in it!! ;D
I rescued a similar one out of a skip, (Not a Kettler but almost identical), for my Boy and have acquired a petrol strimmer motor that I'm considering attaching to in in some way shape or form over winter.
Muwahahahah!

Right, update time. If you look at the new Teardrop trailer build thread, you will see what else I got up to over the weekend, been a bit busy. Saturday morning I was up at 05.00 like a mad man, by 06.30 I was in the garage and started to dismantle the little Kart, which in itself was not that easy. Patient on the table. Closer examination and prodding showed the prognosis to be pretty bad..... but a little boy's smiling face was all I could see. Patient upside down, work progressing slowly. Much WD 40 was used to try persuade very rusty nuts and bolts to sepperate.... but to no avail. This unfortunately necessitated the breaking out of the "Big Guns" and the angle grinder was the first to be called into service. More WD 40 and patience. At this point Mickey came around and we went off to the other neighbours to cut down some trees. After which Nicola and I had to fetch Hannah and all her stuff to move her to Royal Tunbridge Wells for her 2 month Uni placement, which included my first ever 12" Subway !!! Pics in the new Teardrop build thread. Running gear stripped away later in the day. DIRTY !! Cleaned up quite well though. I could not get the front suspension and steering disassembled as one of the pins had a "claw washer" which I removed, but the locating pin would not budge in spite of repeated motivations with a hammer. Next up I started to scrape off all the rust and as much of the epoxy coating on the frame, followed by a lot of sanding and finally a wash with turpentine. I used a sharp, large knife for the stripping as it builds up a nice rhythm when you start using it. Steering wheel was also locked tight, looks like someone had hammered and riveted the lock nut on the steering rod, so no force could loosen it. Sealed up the steering and two front wheels, which I had reassembled at this point. Colours chosen are the same Sinclair Oil Corporation colours the Transit wil be painted (eventually) After a very generous coat of brown Hammerite. If you looked at the initial pics of the go-kart you will see the black plastic is all very faded. I used the old heatgun trick to revive the plastic and think it came out looking pretty good in the end. Before and after on this bit. At this point I went indoors and relaxed with Nicola at about 21.00. Today the fun started, mainly because I am impatient and wanted to get both colours onto the frame. Nicola brought me a mug of tea and proceeded to "back mask" the red inserts in the wheels and then the rest of the wheels. I then painted the red bits with the green on the frame, looks good to me. Now I have to be patient for at least 4 days, to allow the paint to dry propperly before starting re-assembly. I am using new screws etc for that too. Nicola found some nice stickers on E-Bay as well, which will be added when all the assembly is done. The last thing I did today was to make a number plate for the little guy, his initials are " E S " so one of the number plates from my collection came in handy. So there you go, one Go Kart on its way to completion. Did think of adding Bosozuko style pipes and a hooter to it as well, but was told that "Less is More" Next update when I reassemble over next weekend.

Wow, productive day Grizz......That little kart is looking 100% better already, you'll have to get the kart next to the Transit when it's been done in the Sinclair colours......Will make for a good photo shoot. ;D Top work though, that's one lucky lad!
