Afternoon all Seeing the current crop of stripped out hatches with tweaked powerplants cropping up on here has started me thinking about changing the passat TDi for something a bit more fun (too the point that me and Bruce went and looked at a Puma powered Ka on Thursday) So, theoretical budget it £1k (roughly what I think I can get for the passat and the porker alloys it got fitted). Criteria, must be capable of daily use (60 mile, mixed driving) and return around 40MPG and be fun My thoughts are split in 2 categories 1) Standard cars with tweaks 318Ti (with the 140bhp 16v engine for some rwd giggles) 206GTi K11 Micra 1300 2) engine transplants Mk3 Fiesta with a 1800/2000 Zetec (would prefer an un-kitted model ) MK4 fiesta with a Puma 1.7 engine (infact the entire running gear ) Metro/R100 with a VVC lump So, thoughts, other options? Cheers Craig

A honda with a b-series vtec engine!! Like a civic VTI/SiR
drive it sensibly and you'll get 40mpg, red line at well over 8k for fun times + they go round corners pretty well!

2) engine transplants Mk3 Fiesta with a 1800/2000 Zetec (would prefer an un-kitted model ) Sleeper ftw. Mk3 fezzers are currently languishing in chav sh1tt3r limbo (yes, there is the odd minter on the show circuit, but on the whole they're at the 'run into the ground then scrap' stage in their lives).

I've been telling myself and everyone else that I was done with old tat. Circumstances that prevail right now mean that there could be one of these babies on the horizon, though. I must be getting old, the idea of tooling round in one like that (same age, only white) is rather appealing............ ;D

I'd be all over a Metro GTi if one came up at the right price. Even in standard form you get a lot of bang for you buck plus once that's worn off you have the option of the VVC conversion. That Fiesta is insanely cool, I really want a 3-door Mk3 at the moment but the only ones I can find are more doors.

How about a V8 on gas.... Eg a 540i or LS400 if you can find one?

theres only one of those even vaguely capable of 40mpg, and its the micra. though parts like coilies for those cost more than both your arms and legs would fetch
mk3 fez ftw though. absolutely love them

Micra is goooood fun and cheap for most bits except suspension stuff! Ive just got 2 coils "removed" all round on mine and it rides and handles pretty well (unless u hit a large bump at speed). Engines are revvy and bombproof and go like hell if u get a modded manifold, de cats and decent exhaust. Mine......

This would also be my choice for cheep fun. As long as you can get a rust-free one, or be prepared to get the welder out, then they're great little cars. Play with the suspension for free, engine swaps are bolt in besides a little well published and easy wiring for the VVC. Plus they go like stink once they've got any sized 16 valve in. You should be able to pick up a pre-converted one with a few trick bits on it for your budget too.

Citroen Ax with Saxo VTS engine. 120+bhp easy swap. Or even the VTR goes well. Fun, light, economical, cheap. You'll pick a ready converted one up for £1k in all likely hood.

I doubt the E36 318Ti would be near 40mpg unfortunately. Different car but my E30 318is (practically the same engine) would only get 30-33mpg, and funnily enough I sold it for a Passat 1.9TD estate for my 110 mile round trip commute a day. The E36s are heavier than E30s, but I don't know about the compacts, probably similar. The E36 probably is better aerodynamically, but I don't think that will make up 7-10mpg.
How about upping the boost on the Passat and stripping that out? It's already on coilies, and how many derv estates do you see as track cars? Is it the 1.9TD or TDi?

If it's any help, I get about 300 miles to 50l around town and 400 miles to 50l on a motorway run in my 318ti my old e36 318is was the the same to.
So thats about 27-37mpg

you could stay with the dubs... a decent golf gti will be out of your price range but you can pick up a good mk2 scirocco for cheap as chips. gti engines, mk1 golf suspension so cheap upgrades, lower centre of gravity, great handling... and you can squeeze 40mpg out of them on a motorway run...

Is it the 1.9TD or TDi? my old 318is (e36) used to do well over 40mpg on a motorway run, not sitting at anything like 70 either, even round town it would do mid 30's and like i said i really don't hang about, ive never had a better mpg petrol car that wasnt a cinqecento and that wasnt that much better...

them 318ti's are really under rated cars. my mates got one. its virtually as quick up to 3rd gear in the real world as my 325. handles quite nicely. drives really well. plus things like coilovers etc are cheap. Be different. good on fuel too
